The UK economic shrank “unexpectedly” according to news reports. Buried in the Bloomberg article is this note about the energy prices in April:

On the other hand, the Russian economy continues to exceed expectations. The central bank recently cut interest rates back to pre-sanctions levels.

Is it really unexpected that self-imposed embargos on energy imports are resulting in inflation and a contracting economy in Britain and the other western countries?

Are the sanctions hurting Europe and the US more than they hurt Russia?

They are not cutting rates because their economy is exceeding expectations.
