So what? Explain to us the relevance of the trade deficit when discussing completely shutting down the border please. Do you believe this means that US manufacturers and service providers would NOT be losing horrific amounts of money daily during the closure? Or do you believe manufacturers would no longer require the goods they need to make their products. We’re talking a total economic effect of about 1.5 billion per DAY with the border completely closed. So please, go ahead and explain how the annual trade deficit is relevant to this discussion. I’m waiting with bated breath.

U.S. goods and services trade with Mexico totaled an estimated $615.9 billion in 2017. Exports were $276.2 billion; imports were $339.8 billion. The U.S. goods and services trade deficit with Mexico was $63.6 billion in 2017.
I guess the logic is if we have a deficit of $63 billion, might as well say “screw it” and close the border. Then we’d lose $276 billion in exports and who knows how many billions in loses from goods and services created from Mexico imports. Sure, that $276 billion loss is nearly 5 times the trade deficit, but at least some people would sleep well at night knowing we really stuck it to Mexico.

When the border isn’t shut down next week, will Trump supporters:
- Say Donald was just trolling libs, yuk yuk you’ve been fooled again by Trump’s eleventy-dimensional genius
- Say that of course Donald didn’t actually mean he’d shut the ENTIRE border down
- Say the border IS actually being shut down, the lib media simply isn’t reporting it to make Donald look bad
- Say that once again, poor Donald has been thwarted in his noble efforts to MAGAKAG by the Deep State, Socialist Democrats, and Traitorous RINOs

A closing of the border will mostly affect Mexico who now mostly benefits from trade. You apparently have not been paying attention, or, you are trying to scare American citizens over a justified closing of the border which will encourage Mexico to stop the flow of poverty stricken migrants from Central America who are headed for the United States.

The whole point of trade is that both parties benefit from it - the buyer and the seller.
