"A report by two trade groups showed U.S. beer-industry jobs dropped 40,000 since 2016 as metal tariffs boosted aluminum-can costs, leading to a drop in investment. The biennial study by the Beer Institute and National Beer Wholesalers Association said direct, indirect and induced jobs fell to 2.19 million in 2018 from 2.23 million in 2016.
“Aluminum tariffs are increasing brewers’ costs and are an anchor on a vibrant industry,” Jim McGreevy, the chief executive officer of the Beer Institute in Washington, said in an emailed statement. “Each brewer is deciding for themselves how to absorb that expense, whether it’s raising prices, laying off workers or delaying innovation and expansion."
I guess the good news is that 40,000 less people work in an industry that a lot of people hate.
Farmers. Anyone needing steel. Anyone needing aluminum. Etc.
Anyone wish Trump had another tactic other than bullying?
Total cases of beer, wine and spirits consumed in the U.S. dropped 0.8% in 2018, the third consecutive year of declined, according to a report from IWSR, which studies the beverage market. The main culprit is the beer slump, with consumption down 1.5% as more drinkers gravitated to spirits and wine.
Quit brewing watered down “beer” and make something worth drinking. Maybe your numbers will improve.
“A beer can cost about 10 cents to make, the Beer Institute said.
In the unlikely event that the can is made entirely of imported aluminum — no recycled or domestic content — the 10 percent tariff might add a penny to the cost, or 6 cents to a six-pack.”
“But recycling is an essential part of the aluminum story. The metal is 100 percent recyclable — it can be remelted and used over and over — and is one of the most commonly recycled commodities. A typical aluminum can contains 70 percent recycled metal … “
So the actual added cost to a six-pack is about 1.8 cents. The beer companies will charge 2 cents more, which will not cause anyone to not buy just as much beer as they did before the tariff increase, and the companies will make a higher profit of 0.2 cents per six-pack.
My bet is that they will raise their price closer to 10 cents (rather than 2) per six-pack; blame the tariffs; and make a killing of 8.2 cents more profit. And if the tariff drops back, the price of beer will stay high, because the consumers will have become used to the higher price.
President Obama was in office in 2016…so what ever is happening, it can’t all be blamed on Trump. Once again, this is one sided reporting which if you can’t tell the whole truth…it’s a lie.
