I’m sure they’ve picked up new skills just by being on the job but they would be low-skill people that could be replaced by people with minimal training.

It’s not a reflection on their worth as human beings, and yes- I’m sure you could make arguments that if you use a bunch of low-skilled “mules” (for lack of a better term) your productivity might suffer.

However, all of this is a diversion from the fact that there are ways to compete in a global economy that don’t entail trying to resurrect things the way they were in 1950.
