Me either. How does Donald Trump being able to Twitter have a negative impact? How much power does Twitter have? That is why I call it a Tempest in a Teapot. From what I could tell, President Trump would Tweet something and hoards would jump on to tell him (and everyone else) how wrong he was.

I doubt any of the President’s Tweets influenced anyone to change their minds. He was just a voice among many.

As far as students go: Why should one student disrupt the learning of 29 others? Because, after all, 29 students aren’t that big of a deal? Until you multiply 29 by the number of classrooms across the nation, and we find the law allowing disorderly students to remain in the classroom has just as much of an effect (if not greater) as the Tweets of one person.

Personally, I see no difference between the principle of the requirement to adhere to the ToS of twitter or this forum.

I would not agree that Trump’s tweets would not have had the ability to influence others and he was not sanctioned by twitter because of his political leaning.

With respect to a disruptive student I don’t downplay the impact that could have on other students in a classroom. I would advocate that teachers/schools should be better resourced to deal with those unruly students. However, those unruly students do not have the same potential to impact others as Trump had.

It is quite clear that there has been the ability for some on twitter to spread misinformation about vaccines, COVID-19 etc.

What law is that?

People need to grow up and do their own research. “According to something I read on Twitter” should be regarded with the same impact as “According to Mickey Mouse.”

You do understand it was an opinion of what could be? That IF a social media platform becomes large enough, then their operation should fall under the rights (freedom of expression) guaranteed by the Constitution. If it remains a small enough to qualify as a simple private enterprise, those in charge may ban at will.

Ok. So you would have laws that apply to larger social media companies that don’t apply to smaller ones which would allow govt to dictate their TOS. Doesn’t sound very libertarian. Sounds quite anathema to libertarianism.

But back to what is, under current law, should Trump win his suit against Twitter forcing his way back on via govt order?

I think Donny should be able to demand NBC that he be reinstated on “The Apprentice”, too.

That is an admirable aspiration that unfortunately is not met by reality.

The free speech right guaranteed by the Constitution are for protection from government entities not private entities. There is no “right to free expression” on the private property of others.

WW

It would be nice to think that the populace can simply ignore disinformation on social media. The sad truth is that disinformation and conspiracies tend to be amplified on social media in ways that sway people toward severe consequences.

The best example is Myanmar- where disinformation spread on social media led to whole scale slaughter of ethnic rohingya.

No, that’s going off on a tangent. Just as government is governed by the Constitution, the powers of a PRIVATE company would also be governed by the Constitution. Those private powers are just as able to follow the Constitution on their own as any government agency. Why do you believe government alone is able to follow the Constitution and a private business is utterly unable to do this?

And what laws? Who decides what constitutes a TOS violation? The government? It’s obviously impossible.

Sheesh in Texas they created a law that allows for “opposing viewpoints” as some way to counter liberal schooling. But an unforeseen result is that educators might literally have to allow “alternative” understandings of the Holocaust.

Can you give us a framework for how a social media company would change to no longer allow “censorship”?

Don’t know, don’t care about one individual. I’ve had to settle a few middle school fights that were more interesting. The best solution: Both agree to abide by the results of a game of rock-paper-scissors. Works on the playground.

What in the Constitution governs the TOS of a private company?

Are you advocating amending the Constitution?

You just don’t want to come out against Trump here. I understand.

Grin. CEOs need a substitute teacher to figure this out? Let people speak. To me it is obvious, but when someone signs up, (if this is not obvious to CEOs), let them have their customers indicate they understand anything they “hear” should follow the age old adage of, “Don’t believe everything you hear.” Verify everything on your own. Remember, 280 characters cannot cover a topic in any real depth. Do your own research.

Actually, you haven’t understood anything I’ve written–probably my fault…but even so…

Why don’t I want to come out against President Trump? I am interested in knowing. He is merely one of many who used a platform I never have had any interest in following. Didn’t follow Twitter before Donald Trump became President; didn’t follow Twitter when he became President; still don’t follow it.

Twitter is simply one of many giant corporations/big businesses. That is where they cross my Radar. I favor small businesses. What say you: Is President Trump more small business or more big business? That will give you an answer to how I view Mr. Trump as a businessman.

I’ve already said plainly I don’t care how the issue of Twitter vs Trump plays out. If you are so curious about how I view Donald Trump: I could work side-by-side with him for over twenty years, and he would never notice my presence.

During the 2020 election, I was talking with middle school students. They were wondering about my vote. I told them I had to decide between having someone whose political views I didn’t particularly care for in the White House or a middle school student. They assured me that a middle school student would be a great asset to the White House. So, I voted for Donald Trump. I have never regretted my vote, and I would vote for him again.

If you only wanted to know my opinion on Donald Trump, why dress it up? Just ask. I have stronger opinions on big government, big business, and the main stream news media.

So ok- Holocaust denialism? Pro nazi retweets? deep fakes of politicians saying things they didn’t?

I could go on but you get the idea. Do you really believe everything should be allowed?

I get the idea and I am quite able to identify all this as nonsense on my own. I don’t need a censor to do it for me. I think freedom of expression is worth wading through these annoyances.

Kind of reminds me of what someone said about it being better that ten guilty go free than one innocent be convicted. Maybe we could rephrase this as, Better that ten lies be told than our speech be regulated.
