The FAA supervises and regulates the aviation sector. It’s involvement is as existential function. Boeing cannot push out or present and discuss planned updates with the FAA when the gov is shut.
My understanding was it had a tendency to pitch up so the MCAS is utilized to lower the nose. But the AOA sensors can get wonky and then the whole system fouls up.
Regardless, it just seems like sloppy work on Boeing’s part. The 737 is an amazing workhorse, but they really should design a replacement from the ground up and not do these bush league “redesigns” that fundamentally alter the flight characteristics of the plane.

Go investigate this. Not just a software glitch like “first & last names” get crossed when a new service pack is installed.
Because of engine positioning in front of the wings, this plane seems more vulnerable to instability at times.
The auto-trim is meant to correct for this.
When an auto-trim runaway occurs, some pilots do not know how to turn the auto-trim off.
And it seems it is not covered in the manual. And the sensors that signal the auto-trim system are critical to calibrate.
Boeing had better get on top of this quickly!!

Correct. Many in my circle of professional pilots agree with what Trump said. Many pilots now days grew up on automation and don’t have very good stick and rudder skills when automation fails. American pilots flying theses planes have significant training on theses scenarios. However many of these other countries do not. Automation has outstanding benefits, however one of the disadvantages is humans can rely on it to much and get lazy. Anouther is companies can hire less qualified pilots.

Boeing’s CEO called Donald yesterday and so probably everything is now okey dokey.
I’m flying Southwest next month and I called today to see what types of planes I wouid be on, None are on a Max. I wouid have switched flights otherwise.
Trump wants to turn back from technical advances at a sign of a fixable problem. But then, he’s an idiot.
Would you feel safer flying in 737 MAX after the fix, or a newly built 707?

Apologies to STODR for replying, but I don’t think that’s what he’s saying. Automation is good but you still need to have well-trained pilots with sound fundamental skills; relying too much on today’s level of automation leads some airlines to think they can do without the latter.
It appears that Boeing is guilty of not providing training as well as the software problem.

I agree with that and maybe…just maybe…that’s what Trump was trying to say.
Which is why he should let his comms team draft a message for him rather than tweet it out.
Trump knows… better than anyone.
