Trumps DOJ obtained phone records of WaPo reporters who covered Russian interference

“The newspaper said the records were obtained over reporting done in early 2017 over the role of Russia in the 2016 presidential election”

Nothing to see here? I guess nothing says Murica like having your cronies spy on those reporting negatively on your Administration. They also wanted to obtain the reporters emails.

Well at least you are aware that Obama did worse, his targets were the journalists, this appears to be directed at the leakers, not the journalists.

legally obtained as part of an investigation into leaks of classified information.

if they wanted to so bad why didn’t they? they had a court order to do so. and it was non content email.

“The Post on Friday called such a move by the DOJ “rare” and noted that these kinds of efforts require approval by the attorney general. A Justice Department spokesperson confirmed to the newspaper that the approval came in 2020. The attorney general for most of that year was William Barr”

Makes it just a wee bit easier wouldn’t you say?

"Marc Raimondi, a spokesman for the Justice Department, told the Post that “(w)hile rare, the Department follows the established procedures within its media guidelines policy when seeking legal process to obtain telephone toll records and non-content email records from media members as part of a criminal investigation into unauthorized disclosure of classified information.”

“He added: “The targets of these investigations are not the news media recipients but rather those with access to the national defense information who provided it to the media and thus failed to protect it as lawfully required.”

What do you think a DOJ spokesman is going to say? “Yea we were going after the reporters?”

C’mon man…

except there is zero evidence that they did the Obama thing and targeted the reporters as this was part of an investigation into leaks of classified information. proper procedures were used and a court order was obtained for the non content email records which was never executed. you don’t actually think a judge granted the order outside of a bonified investigation do you?

It appears they were looking for who internally, was leaking information that may be classified for national security? What’s the problem with this IYO?

They can trust the federal government again now that Biden is president and Trump is not the president.

You mean it was all legal and for the purpose of catching suspected illegal activity?
Then what is the purpose of this thread?
Wait, didn’t Clapper tell us several years ago that the government collected non content records of everyone’s telephone calls? Oh wait. No, he lied that they weren’t doing that but it turned out they were doing it.
You mean now all of sudden that is a bad thing?

Wondered this as well. The courts decided phone records aren’t our records a while ago.

Technically legal.

I don’t think anyone is arguing it wasn’t legal.

Just wrong.

Since President Biden took office in January, over 700 people have been injured or killed in 139 mass shootings as of late last month.
