A previously undisclosed report by staffers at the Federal Trade Commission reveals new details about how Google Inc. GOOGL -1.63% manipulated search results to favor its own services over rivals’, even when they weren’t most relevant for users.

In a lengthy investigation, staffers in the FTC’s bureau of competition found evidence that Google boosted its own services for shopping, travel and local businesses by altering its ranking criteria and “scraping” content from other sites. It also deliberately demoted rivals.

Seriously? They boosted their own companies! Duh!

The court ordered microsoft broken up, microsoft appealed, the DOJ settled with only the requirement that they provide information for third parties to develop software…and Netscape died.

You left out the step where the appeals court overturned the lower courts ruling requiring Microsoft be broken up

It’s not insane, Google has a monopoly in the search business and it ain’t because they are smarter.

Google does not have a monopoly in the “Search business” - they are certainly the most popular search engine, but they are not the only one.

As for how they got to be the most popular - it is most certainly because they were “smarter”. They had a better product.

Ask AltaVista, Yahoo, WebCrawler, Ask.com, Hotbot, Dogpile, and all the other defunct search engines of the 90s and early 2000s.

The reason for Google’s pominence is not “smarter”, its “sooner”. Yes they were better than Jeeves, but their continued prominence is the inertia of users rather than choice by users.

I’m so old that I remember when Facebook was touted to be vastly different from MySpace because it was meant for networking with people you actually know (friends and family) then watched as it slowly became more and more like Facebook where random people started following other random people’s profiles.

Can i assume you meant that Facebook became more and more like Myspace?

If Facebook doesn’t reform itself, then another competitor could very well come in to fill the niche that Facebook no longer fills.
