Being a diabetic, I can tell you that’s not how it works. If I drop dead of a heart attack tonight, a heart attack is what will be listed as cause of death. Now, the diabetes may very well be what caused the heart attack, but it would be the heart attack that killed me.

Same thing with COVID. If the individual was plugging along just fine before Covid-19, that demonstrates that COVID was the actual trigger that caused death, and it would rightly be listed that way on the death certificate

Correct, the proper thing to do, in order to make sure you are not under or over counting COVID deaths is to look at excess deaths. Meaning, all things being equal, how many more deaths are there this year in comparison with prior years?

This year we have seen 300k excess deaths. Now some of them could be increased suicide or murder rates over the normal rate, but a fair bit of that is going to be COVID.
