This defense that Trump just wanted to investigate corruption is laughable, as if he seriously wanted to conduct a fair, honest investigation. He’s ignored all the corruption surrounding him his whole life, yet suddenly wants an investigaion in a case that specifically targets one of his political adversaries.

… violation of the law in asking the Ukrainians to take another look at the investigation into Burisma and the Bidens.
Yesterday Trump was asked who else was being investigated for corruption.
He said that he would have to consult “the list”.
I will bet that right after that someone on his staff said, “we need to make up a list”.
And what he clearly has wanted since before his election victory, is for US allies to stop using the US as a piggy bank and contribute their fair share to their own security. Hence his holding back military aid that Europe should have been supplying to Ukraine to pressure Europe into doing their duty. That accounts quite adequately for the delay in military aid spending.
What he also has clearly wanted since before his election victory, is to root out the corruption in governments that oppresses those nations’ citizens. That adequately accounts for his request for assistance from the Ukrainian president in investigating a potential multimillion dollar fleecing of Ukraine by US government officials and potential electoral fraud perpetrated on the US voters using Ukraine resources.
That these two topics arose in the same conversation is neither unexpected nor prima facie sinister, given the election policies of both men.
