Buying off potential witnesses certainly looks like the behavior of someone with something to hide.

Meaning it is a standard tactic to list everyone who is a potential defense witness, like people who make travel arrangements or set up meetings, as a defendant in order to destroy their usefulness as a defense witness.

If he is presently innocent according to the legal system, he is free to help whoever he wants with their legal costs.
