Take that up with the dictionary, since they do have more than one definition. You can certainly be a nationalist who is simply a patriot, without being a fascistic bigot and isolationist, in the mold of a person with a Hitleresque type of philosophy.

I appreciate your attempt to tell me what Trump “really meant”. Perhaps you’re right.
I doubt it, since Trump clearly doesn’t support free trade with the world.
That flies in the face of his actions and words. Trump has not only been working with nations on trade agreements, but he has even called for open and free trade, without tariffs or state sponsored subsides.
Don’t take that comment personally, I was speaking to my critics in general.

No, there is a significant distinction between being a “nationalist” and a “patriot” - that’s why there are two different words.
Using the dictionary as your defense is silly. The dictionary defines “literally” as “not literally” now.

He could have said he is patriotic that would have carried his point across just fine…but no he is a nationalist

Yes, I have. But nationalism and patriotism are not synonyms.

Have you ever thought that patriot and nationalist, in the context he was speaking to, mean the same thing?
But whatever, you and a whole cast of trump despising people want to assume Trump was essentially saying “I’m just like Hitler, just like Hitler!”
pa·tri·ot
[ˈpātrēət]
NOUN
a person who vigorously supports their country and is prepared to defend it against enemies or detractors.
“a true patriot”
synonyms
nationalist · loyalist · chauvinist · jingoist · jingo · flag-waver · isolationist · xenophobe
Write a letter to all the caretakers of English language dictionaries, and demand they change the definitions of nationalist to only have one possible definition
"just like Hitler, just like Hitler!”
They don’t mean the same thing.
“Nationalism”, as an ideological term, has existed for hundreds of years.
Again with the dictionary.
This isn’t elementary school anymore.
Do you think patriot and xenophobe are synonyms?
Your dictionary does.

He made sure to go out of his way TWICE to say that he was a “nationalist” so no…
As to his “context” actions speak louder then words… I think the context is obvious

Imposing tariffs has been a cornerstone of his Presidency so far - and he literally wrote “trade is bad” in the margin of one of his speeches.
Please don’t try to convince me that Trump supports free trade.

Nationalism is not the term Trump used.

No, I dont think I will. Because I’m an adult, and understand what the purpose of a dictionary is.
Is “xenophobe” a synonym for “patriot”?
A nationalist is one who believes in nationalism. Just like a communist is one who believes in communism.

Meh. Why do you think Trump said, “You know, they have a word. It sort of became old-fashioned. It’s called a nationalist. And I say, really, we’re not supposed to use that word.”
He acknowledged that he’s not supposed ot use the word. He knows EXACTLY what connotation it has.
And, nevertheless, he persisted.
Trumpism is the worst part of nationalism, by Trump’s own admission.

It’s entirely possible that Trump thinks nationalism and patriotism are synonyms, and meant that he was a patriot.
Nevertheless, words have meanings.

As a political ideology, there is only one definition of “nationalism”.
Patriotism and Nationalism are not synonyms.
Like I said, whatever Trump says, people who don’t like him will choose the worst interruption, meaning, and context of what he said, and they will run with it, precluding the existence of any other possibilities,
Trump, April 2017: “I’m a nationalist and a globalist.”
In other words, he does want the other global governments and nations of the world thrive, but for Trump, America’s welfare and interests will always come first.
So what you’re saying is that he’s too stupid to realize the authoritarian (and racist) implications of the word while demanding people use that word?
I can’t decide if you think we’re dumb, or if you’re that dumb.
Libs have tacked on the word “white” to make it racist. Libs have done this.
Nationalism is not racist. People of any color can be nationalists in this country.

White nationalists did that. It’s scary that some would scold us for recognizing reality.
