Until recent decades, most people in the US lived on farms and raised their own livestock. Farm kids frequently would treat piglets as pets and would later have the grown pig served as sausage or pork chops on the family dinner table or see the pig sold off to the local butcher.
The classic book, Charlotteās Web, is based on this reality of farm life. Amish farmers still raise and butcher their own pigs.
