They elect Republican Governors and with the Menendez debacle they have a chance of picking up the seat if they get behind a center right candidate
Who controls the Senate is much more influential than any one governor. That’s where (unfortunately) the real power is.

Well, considering the rumblings that Menendez may launch a third party bid, it definitely appears possible.
