Okay, it seems that most here are not understanding what I am concerned with. In the past and as now, if parents are caught illegally entering our country they (them) are arrested and placed into custody. Any children are referred to the federal equivalent of CPS. That has been the law for some time and I don’t have a problem with it.
But this new policy extends to families that lawfully present themselves at a port seeking asylum. In the past these families were allowed to stay together while they went through proceedings. This new policy forces the children to be separated from their parent(s) and placed into a separate facility.
The administration has admitted that this new policy is designed to discourage parents desperately seeking safety from persecution and danger from bringing their children to the United States. In other words, this policy is designed to be punitive.
And so this is where I have a problem with this new policy. These parents have done nothing wrong. They are asking that they be given consideration for asylum. I don’t think it is necessary or proper to take the children away from their parents in this situation.

What you state is not official policy. Official policy is that there will only be separation in that case if it is doubted that the child is with the legal custodian…for obvious reasons.
There may be some anomalies, and some groups will doubtless contest that the policy is followed.

"In a White House press briefing Monday, Nielsen said, “DHS is not separating families legitimately seeking asylum at ports of entry.” But she said DHS “will only separate a family if we cannot determine there is a familial relationship, if child is at risk with the parent or legal guardian, or if the parent or legal guardian is referred for prosecution.”

Burnett also has reported that some families are not being allowed to request asylum — that they are being repeatedly turned away and told the CBP facility is too full to accept them.

Nielsen has denied that some asylum-seekers who present themselves at a port of entry are being turned away, which would be a violation of international law.

“We are saying we want to take care of you in the right way. Right now we do not have the resources at this particular moment in time. Come back,” she said."
