I think he does care about poor optics. He has his take on it. What’s poor optics? Maybe it depends on who you piss off, or fire up. I’d have to wonder though, why he hasn’t fired Sessions, Rosentein, and Mueller? If it’s no concern about optics, then why not? You make some fair points. I’ll admit you could be on to something here. Although I will challenge with the idea he has not fired a bunch of people in the DOJ, including Mueller, because every attorney in his orbit has to have told him he would be sealing his own obstruction of justice fate. I’d argue he fears criminal charges more than impeachment hearings. Hence his “red line” stance when it comes to his finances.

Now he’s stuck out in the open. The defenses he has built to protect the information related to his business and his past are crumbling one by one by one. They were barely strong enough to stave off a barely interested press and a completely uninterested party vetting process. They are surely not strong enough to withstand even marginally competent legal or prosecutorial scrutiny.

He underestimated the stupidity of the American public. Or at least a majority of the voting portion of it it minus 3 million.

I’d only add to this, he underestimated the idiocy of the Democratic Party as well, to put forth literally the only candidate perhaps on the planet, he actually could beat.

He’s not fired a bunch of people in the DOJ. That’s rue. I’d say he would, if not for politically sensitive advisors. He probably wants to. Chomping at the bit, I’d guess. I can’t argue with that.

I hold Obama largely responsible for that. He essentially pre-litigated the thing by holding in favor of Clinton over Biden and prevented what in most cases would have been a robust selection process. The Sanders phenomenon likely would not have happened had their been more credible candidates from the center.

I’m referencing criminal charges for obstruction of justice, if he were to fire either Rosenstein or Mueller. Even though I do not believe a sitting President can be charged or indicted while in office, they can once they are out of office, either via impeachment, or just when their time comes up. Firing either of those men, or Sessions in order to have a new AG who then ends the Mueller probe, would make for a much, much easier case to prosecute him on obstruction.

I believe he fears criminal charges more than impeachment, which is why he has not moved to fire these folks at the DOJ. Not because he is concerned with the optics of it. Like you, I bet he is chomping at the bit to do just that, but is afraid of the criminal penalties that could be levied against him. I believe this because of his statement about Mueller looking at his finances would be considered him crossing a red line. Likely because there are criminal misdeeds in Trump’s finances. He has been heavily involved in New York real estate for decades, and there is no convincing me that every single financial transaction he has ever made has been above board. He knows it too, which is why he warned against looking into his finances.

Trump seems unable to grasp that he could actually do a look-see at all this information if it was actually there instead of breathlessly repeating Limbaugh and Fox.

He truly does seem intellectually incapable of comprehending this most basic set of facts. And he lacks the intellectual curiosity to inform himself on the true scope of his power. I suppose we should be thankful for the small things.

I think he understands the scope of his power. I think he also understands the politics (esp. media reaction), if it could be claimed he tampered with the investigation. The politics of it is such that he’d probably fare better, if he went riding bare chested, with Putin, and posted his own selfies.

He also understands how to use (and con) the media, and therefore the public.
