Ticktockers Believe They Can Change Their Race

Mental illness left undiagnosed and untreated.

David Freund, a historian of race and politics and an associate professor at the University of Maryland, College Park, corroborates the idea that a “biological race” does not exist. What we know today as “race” is a combination of inherited characteristics and cultural traditions passed down through generations, he said.

In addition, Freund said, the modern concept of race is inseparable from the systemic racial hierarchy hundreds of years in the making. Simply put, changing races is not possible, because “biological races” themselves are not real.

It’s not real, but you can’t change it.

“Experts agree race is not genetic. But they contend that even though race is a cultural construct, it is impossible to change your race because of the systemic inequalities inherent to being born into a certain race.

It’s not genetic, it does not exist, but it includes “inherited characteristics”. Ok.

Race, and every word we use to call or categorize anything is just a social construct, as words are social constructs. But at least we should maintain some degree of consistency.

So does that mean we can be whatever race we want and make other people accept it?

And there is no appropriation?

marx nodding yes

I say we can be race-fluid. It’s a social construct. “Society” is ever changing. Why not?

Take Obama for example. Half black, half white. Why can’t he switch back and forth, depending on how he identifies?

Or Fweedom between Indian and Irish Jamaican?

Any mixed social construct person for that matter.

Trump could in theory identify as black, given that he is the only POTUS in history not descended from slavers.

Why not? Faux-cahontas Warren modeled that for them.

People would get mad at me when I would refer to Obama as our 44th white President. Not understanding my angle. Why am I wrong?

Just another white guy.

Like many Italian immigrants at the great migration end of 19th century their immigration papers identified their race as “Southern Italian”. Our grandfather was no exception. It even appears on the ship manifest “Southern Italian” as his race. We have the documents to prove it.
Can we now then consider our race appropriately? We are after all direct descendants.

In my lifetime Italians were not considered “white” by many if not most in the South.

Where I grew up, some Italians changed their name to sound more English. They were as white as milk. But Italian. It served them well.

A friend of mine is of southern Italian ancestry and said his father was told to use the “colored” washrooms when he was in the military in the South in the 1950s.

Of course, modern tests show that Italians typically have 1-3% sub-Saharan African DNA.

By the one drop rule, if you are part Italian, you are Black. Embrace your heritage!

Why should we be confined to the race we were assigned at birth? Cisrace is just one of many races.

To be fair, the way humans use the word “race” is a human construct.

Biologically we are all ONE race,

“Genetic data sets are used to see if biological races exist in humans and in our closest evolutionary relative, the chimpanzee. Using the two most commonly used biological concepts of race, chimpanzees are indeed subdivided into races but humans are not.”

Also,

“Adaptive traits, such as skin color, have frequently been used to define races in humans, but such adaptive traits reflect the underlying environmental factor to which they are adaptive and not overall genetic differentiation, and different adaptive traits define discordant groups.”

To my recollection, at least where I lived, Italians were not considered at all except in movies as there basically were none. But there was a Greek immigrant and a person who was part Native American in my classroom in elementary school which was whites only (yes, I am that old).

We’ve had our DNA analyzed. You’re correct and I’ve actually had some conversations about that with African American friends. They laugh and in addition our DNA is traced to the Ionian Peninsula of Greece and the Ashkenazi Jew tribe of Central Europe!
Gets better. Mom is a soon to be 98 y/o flaming red head! We got Scandinavian, Welch and Scottish DNA from her.
We’re all over the place but anyone who studies world histoire especially ancient European history would understand why.
