Male bobcats, like other large cats, are known to kill the offspring of other males, but killing their own offering is not common. And it is usually done to trigger their mother back into heat so that they can pass on their genes in place of a rival’s. With the mother out of the picture (apparently,) that also lessens the peril for the cubs.
That’s my understanding as well. But how would he know? Instincts? He wouldn’t know who there mother was.
Just another useless information for those that don’t know. Male rabbit is called a buck, those bucks will kill young bucks even if they are their off springs. Every once in while I’ll find a young half grown rabbit with bit marks in back of the neck. That and I use to raise em…learned the hard way on that one.
"Cats have a powerful sense of smell, about 14 times better than humans, due to having ~200 million scent receptors (vs. 5-6 million for humans) and specialized V1R receptors for scent differentiation, making smell crucial for hunting, communication (pheromones, marking territory), identifying food, and navigation, with a unique nasal structure efficiently separating air for smelling and breathing, like a lab’s gas chromatograph. "
Gimp is starting to dominate around here…acting more like full ground cat that out about with total confidence.
Last night camera caught him making his patrols just like I see with other grown cats. Taking the exact same path as that adult big male cat couple weeks ago…who may or may not be his dad.
This morning he did his walk about.
And than later came back for a snack. I tapped on the window and he acknowledged me.
Of course Clumsy had taken first two pieces. Don’t know what to do with him. I caught him waiting for me just inside the brush as I was stocking the post. That day he taken two piece again, than Stalker came out and taken third piece…which is always nice to see her. Than Gimp stop by and there was nothing on the post.
Stalker and Gimp is on the program…Clumsy I wish I knew from the start, I know few people with lots of land and environment that would have him into there home.
Now he’s going to learn the hard way at some point in his life. May have to trap him and take him as far away as possible, away from people…or I wait until Gimp drives his ass off.
Yep…I went out while Clumsy was coming out this morning. He ran away. Testing him. I believe that video was Gimp. Notice how big he’s getting. Shoulder height is almost 18 inches and they’re only about 7 and half to 8 months old.
Today I delay putting out bird food 1 hour hoping he would move on. But it wasn’t 30 seconds afterwards he came out. He waited for hour after normal feeding time.
I haven’t seen Stalker in long time…maybe last time was before new year. I hope she’s alright but again I’m pretty sure she has her own life now.
Gimp did come out yesterday and grab chicken leg/thigh. He didn’t come out for 3 or 4 days before then. He’s pretty much on his own too.
I wish I had known back when I started this that Clumsy would have made a good lazy house cat. I know few people would have given him a good home.
