How would it chill journalists? Their asking for a ■■■■■■■ list of journalists names!
And? Are these journalists supposed to be secret? What’s the FTC going to do them?
You guys have really lost the plot entirely.
Ok. If you don’t think the FTC making a list of journalists is intimidating, how about the IRS?
"Federal agents were dispatched to Taibbi’s residence the very same day that the investigative journalist appeared before the Select Subcommittee on the Weaponization of the Federal Government, also chaired by Representative Jordan.
According to the letter, first obtained by the Wall Street Journal, Taibbi notified Jordan that the IRS instructed him to phone the federal agency four days later, and he was later told that both his 2018 and 2021 tax filings were requested because of “concerns over identity theft.”
Interesting to see that now Musk who we were told purchased Twitter to protect free speech is now denying those who will not pay a subscription fee from the the “For you” channel. This means those that pay Twitter will get preferential treatment for their activity.
I suspect this is a desperate attempt to replace the loss of advertising revenue and in reaction to Musk sharing the value of Twitter has dropped by over 50% since he bought the company.
Of course its his baby now and he is free to do whatever he wants to monetize it but lets not kid ourselves that Musk vastly overpaid for the platform out of philanthropic concerns.
This Forbes article does a great job of explaining what this new monetization effort by Musk means.
I expect to see the sub fee increase to $9.99 by the end of the year.
This is concerning and stretching the boundaries of coincidence. Though to be fair to the IRS (not sure why that needs to be a thing though) we only have his word that this happened or happened for the reasons stated.
The IRS is already too powerful and we do well to hold our elected reps accountable to ensure it is not weaponized.
Not sarcastic at all, have you not been paying attention? If you have advertisers they will demand restrictions on otherwise legal speech. Pretty simple.
If you can’t afford ten dollars a month your opinion isn’t worth much. But the destitute can be accommodated as well, they can watch x number of ads instead.
Its now only the public square if you can afford to pay to play.
Not that I have ever accepted the town square argument. No one has a right to tweet or use twitter. And Musk is free to do what he wants with Twitter but hopefully now those Musk fans who said he bought Twitter out of the goodness of his heart to protect free speech realize that was bunkum.
Do you think people go on the internet for free? Do you think it costs nothing to mske your way to the public squate to express your opinions? There are always opportinity costs for every choice we make.
