The situation is truly desperate in the United States District Court for the Eastern District of California

The United States District Court for the Eastern District of California has 6 authorized judgeships. The last new judgeships in that district were created 40 years ago in 1978 and the population since then has increased 220%. Even though all judgeships in that district are current filled, the judges face an impossible caseload and many civil cases take greater than 4 years from filling to termination due to the backlog.

The Judges of the district just signed a letter to their Congressmen pleading for a judgeship bill to be passed, adding at least 5 new Judgeships. My own judgeship proposal which I submitted to Congress some months ago calls for 7 new Judgeships for that district, as well judgeships in all other districts where they are needed.

Congress needs to pass a judgeship bill. This is NOT an option. It has to happen.
