Seems like this might be the best possible scenario for Republicans.

1. Doing nothing is not an option with a Democrat controlled legislature or because of the unending questions and criticism that would come with inaction.
2. The impeachment might happen now, but the Senate trial would be after Trump is out of office so there wouldn’t be nearly the distraction of the first impeachment/trial.
3. This gives them the opportunity to distance themselves from Trump.
4. They wouldn’t have to worry about him running for office again. They might have to answer questions during a campaign but wouldn’t have to worry about going head to head against his supporters.

Trump holds at a minimum 25% of their voters in the palm of his hand. They can’t win without them.

Why? If he’s not running against another Republican in a primary that 25% has no say. Is the assumption that 25% would either not vote at all or vote against a Republican if running against a Democrat? Besides, if Trump remains out of social media, he won’t have much power to influence his followers. I guess he could get his own TV or radio show.

The other option would be for Republicans to continue to support Trump as a whole. Or I guess try to pretend that he doesn’t exist.

All they have to do is stay home, not an arduous undertaking.

Then the Republicans are screwed no matter what happens.

What is the down side to not voting to convict again? Keeping in mind 78% of republicans still support him.

You will have to defend not doing anything to both the Republicans who think something should have been done and independents as well. I guess if Republicans think keeping that 25% of Trump supporters happy is worth alienating the remaining 75% and independents, nothing is wrong. Quite the risk.

"The Constitution provides that the President “shall be removed from office on impeachment for, and conviction of, treason, bribery, or other high crimes and misdemeanors,” but it says nothing about the timing of when the impeachment and trial may take place. "

The very quote disproves the argument being made. You cannot possibly “be removed from office” if you are not in office.
Political question? Not really. The Congress has only those powers directly given to it, and it is given the power to remove someone from office. If they are not in an office, that is impossible.

Removal from office isn’t the only outcome of the impeachment process, you can be barred from holding a position of trust with the United States government again in the future and you don’t have to be in office for that option to be executed.
