As a forensic accountant, I certainly would consider it if I were at the level where those decisions were made.

Often, one of the most effective ways to investigate any criminal activity is to follow the money. I make good money at doing it for that very reason.

We could just tell everybody he’s a bad guy and wag our finger at him.

That might work for some. But, for me, I take the “forensic” part of forensic accounting very seriously. In forensics, the evidence has to be of a high enough caliber to be used in a court of law.

Thus, digging into actual evidence via the numbers is part of what makes forensic accountants tick.

Can they prosecute him for it?

That’s where it gets really interesting. What it does is establish a pattern of cheating. What that does is establish the basis to dig further for just how long those types of crime ran.

If those crimes run into the period where they are within the Statute of Limitations, then those crimes would be prosecutable.

The next question that would need to be asked is whether Trump himself could be indicted while president. This could then be used as a test case in court to make that determination to answer whether he could be prosecuted now, or if we would have to wait until he’s out of office.

So, in short, the answer is - it depends…
