Oh I agree with you 100%, I am just going by the Simpson/Bowles statement who were saying the only way out of the madness, was increasing taxes as well massive cuts to spending. Of course that was when the national debt was around 12 trillion.
If they compromised the reps should propose the tax hikes, and dems propose the govt cutsā¦
do you know what a deficit is?

Yeah, thatās pretty much untrue.
Yes of course I do, but they go in tandem. Youāre spiking a football after the national debt was doubled. A loss is a loss. The only time we came close to a balanced budget was during the Clinton years.
Remember when Obama promised to take Simpson/Bowles seriously⦠lol!
They were quietly ushered out the back door.

How did the Republican Congress receive the plan?

I donāt know if you got a chance to read this post from margaretms, but if not I recommend it:
Dishonesty and bad faith. Certainly that was the Republicans pushing this latest tax cut. Compare with Obamaās good-faith effort to negotiate the ACAās effect on deficit, which got him nothing, because: dishonesty and bad faith by Republicans, who demanded and got changes, and then gave in return not a single vote.
Then comeās your thread, in which you argue that Republican bad faith and dishonesty is irrelevant because Democratic efforts to reduce deficit spending didnāt pay off the entire debt, or something. Itās hard to see that you have any point, only deflection away from honest and good faith discussion on the matter.
Also, eliminating US sovereign debt entirely isnāt and shouldnāt be a goal. That would starve the economy of liquidity. The goal is to manage debt to keep it within a range of GDP percentage.
