That’s interesting. He was a committed liberal (pro-welfare state, pro-union, pro-civil rights) who was also a Cold War hawk (high defense budget, proto-neocon abroad). He had Boeing; Manchin had coal.
Did Jackson play the same role in blocking the Democrats’ domestic legislation that Manchin has? I don’t know. I suspect he did not, but I gotta look now.
It looks like they think he could manage it- he has been popular. But who knows? I wish all these superannuated senators (Manchin will be 77 in August) and reps and presidential candidates could just let it go and retire like the rest of us, who can’t wait.
Manchin did not block democrat legislation, he pretended to for the folks back home and then at the appropriate time folded like a cheap suit claiming he had it changed to be better, which of course was ■■■■■■■■
Here’s another thing I would say about Joe Manchin. He’s likely more to the right on the social issues like CRT, LGBTQ+, DEI, etc. I would also assume in the middle regarding abortion and more to the right on the border.
“I’m not running for any office, political office. I’ve been very clear about that,” the senator told CNN’s Manu Raju, insisting that his decision to become an independent had nothing to do with running for Senate or governor ahead of the August 1 filing deadline.
