Most posters are acting smug but failing to recognize Trump’s real strengths as an orator.

No, Donald Trump would not make a good showing at The Oxford Union but that’s not what he is trying to do.

I believe it was Toni Morrison who said, “They will not remember what you told them, they will remember how you made them feel,” and for Trump’s base he is masterful at making them feel good. Trump makes them feel cared about and respected and he provides them simple, credible explanations for the anxiety and anger that they feel.

This entire thread plays into Trump’s strength with his audience – that the elites look down on them.

To quote Bob Dylan, “Don’t criticize what you can’t understand.”

How can you be a great orator if you’re only speaking to a minority of the people? Reagan was able to make his audience feel good while reaching out to everyone, not just his base. Trump, conversely, actively turns off a significant population.

The great con man makes his marks feel good as well.

True. And in part it helps explain why his base remains devoted to him even in the face of his most obvious lies. If the lies make them feel good, it’s better than any kept promise.

Martin Luther King was a great orator but he only spoke to a minority of the American people. I’m not talking about the Hallmark Card “dream” version we get on January 19th each year, but the man who inspired people to upend much of the social order against daunting odds.

Jesus’ Sermon the Mount had a tiny audience but still is great oratory.

Even though I do believe that we differ politically, I applaud you for being
able to take a step back and be objective within politics.

Your string of words were put together quite nicely.
To many people on both sides of the spectrum can’t seem to be
objective now adays. It’s sad, because if both sides were more objective then
more things would get done amongst politicians in general now adays.

Just in my opinion, the Republicans seem to budge more, and give up more.
Where as the Democrats basically say it’s their way or no way at all, and
don’t seem to want to actually work together with the Republicans to come to
an agreement at all. That’s not how politics are suppose to work in America.
I think that the Democrats simply want a dictatorship with Socialism and a one
party system. Theirs.
