A type of affirmative action I would consider beneficial is our local school district provides free pre school to those below poverty level and/or to children who have trouble speaking English. Since speaking English will be necessary to understand lessons, this seems a reasonable basis for discriminating.
On the other hand, an unacceptable form of equity was proposed by our former school superintendent. “Gifted” classes were available to about the top 15% of students, using test evaluations. The superintendent did not like the racial or ethnic mix of these gifted classes and decided that they should be made up of the top 15% of blacks, the top 15% of Hispanics, plus the top 15% of whites/asians instead of using an overall criteria the same for everyone. Fortunately, the superintendent decided to go elsewhere.
We parented four of our own and are raising two grandchildren. The last of our children graduated HS in 2015. Grandson is in 1st year college, granddaughter 8th grade. He never wasn’t on the honor Roll and she’s an A/B student. The wife and I always do parent/ teacher stuff and we make sure they always get school work completed. My “retirement” job has been driving a school bus so I get to shoot the breeze with teachers and administrators especially with a student that is a pain in the ass and can’t get their ■■■■ together. My observation and opinion?
Good teachers are grossly underpaid.
School administrators are sometimes chicken ■■■■■ to confront parents of disruptive students.
School discipline has no teeth. Students know they’ll get away with anything like the shoplifters who only steal up to a certain value.
Ban cellphones from schools. If they need to call home, there are phones in the offices.
■■■■■■ teachers should have their credentials lifted. Look at US student’s performance levels.
COVID ■■■■■■ up US students to a point I doubt they’ll catch up 3 lost years of education.
One more:
These kids can’t read, they read words and can’t write a legible sentence using proper grammar.
My elementary education started in 1956. By the 2nd grade we could read the newspaper, it was required and not just the comics. Cursive handwriting had to be mastered in the 3rd grade, print writing started in 1st grade.
Go get a kid now look at their printed hand writing, largely illegible. Show them Cursive handwriting say maybe the Declaration of Independence. They can’t read it except maybe the top line!
Then consider the financial statement if this was a business? It’s sickening how poorly so many of our government agencies/entities are run. Then consider…we aren’t talking about money. We’re talking about our children…the future of our country.
Understand something Bradonites…you’ve been wrong about most everything that’s happened over the past 9 years. You have no credibility in your opinions.
