I can afford nice housing. Why would I want to have housing that is meant to stabilize the lives of homeless people?

Or the jobs don’t pay enough to cover the cost of being alive.

How is it a failing of the economy?

Nonsense. You just need roommates. The homeless are homeless because they won’t work and are bad roommates. Illegals can figure it out and split houses ten ways, because they aren’t spoiled first worlders

I’ve done a lot of work with the homeless (church meals etc.),
AND I once spent a year working the overnight shift in a comveninece store in one of the worst parts of Phoenix.
I’ve had homeless to my house many times for showers, laundry and sometimes for months at a time while they tried to get bck on their feet.
The homeless are homeless because they don’t work.
65-85% of homeless are addicted and/or have a different mental illness and/or have extensive crominal records (typically a long string of small-time stuff) which prevents them from working.
Able-bodied, normal minded people can and do wind up homeless, and once you lose your wallet and IDs it can take 3-6 mos to get back, (it begins with getting a mailing address and reordering your birth certificate,) but 3-6 mos is pretty much it.

Plus, it gives people a sense of pride and ownership. Condo’s have rules and regulations for keeping things nice, neighborhoods have rules and regulations for keeping things nice so why anyone would think just because you’re poor that you can’t lift a finger to do the same is beyond me.
Not only that, but if these rules are in place and the area is well kept, nice and clean I think there would be a lot more acceptance of public housing.

No, it isn’t. It’s called responsibility. Joe’s kid brings drug dealers around and likes to graffiti the building. Joe either gets his kid under control or Joe loses his public housing. The rest of the tenants are safer and can be assured they won’t live in a crime infested building.

LOL, I don’t know what world you live in but try that in a residential neighborhood. Try not mowing your grass and letting weeds grow 6’ tall.
That you think putting effort into your living conditions for both yourself and your fellow residents shouldn’t be required speaks to why places like this turn into a dump.

Who mows the grass in Central Park?

Should they be paid to clean their apartment? Pay them to wash their clothes, change their sheets?

Take a bath? Not do drugs?
How civilized people create a ‘Flash Mob’.
No broken windows, nothing stolen, no one hurt.

Should they be forced to labor for a certain amount of time or be thrown out of housing?
That is the real question.
If they are failing to care for themselves or their surroundings… eviction is not the answer.
And when they wake up have them publicly flogged to death. One or two such examples would solve the problem nation wide.

Invest in keeping the area clean? Sure, why not?
And yes, if they refuse to do so make room for someone who is grateful for the opportunity.
