…CNN flashed a graphic showing NYC’s rental assistance subsidies have increased fivefold since 2020 from $263 million to $1.34 billion in 2025.
“Focus on affordability, especially housing, but not by providing government subsidies,” Zakaria said. “These only seem to have driven up the cost of rent, as subsidies naturally do.”
He then moved to the West Coast and bashed LA for being “another one-party metropolis.”
Zakaria pointed out LA has poured billions into solving its homeless crisis in recent years — and has gotten absolutely nothing out of it. Actually, the problem has only grown worse, with Zakaria highlighting an Associated Press report that found LA County’s homeless population surged 70% between 2015 and 2024.
Chicago is yet another blue city blemish for Dems, Zakaria argued. He said the city is run by an unpopular mayor and has no answers for its ballooning pension payments, which will bankrupt the city sooner or later.
“What is the theory of good government here?” Zakaria asked. “If the answer is keep adding programs, the city will keep producing unaffordability because unaffordability is what happens when government becomes a machine that grows faster than the society it governs.”
Research spanning decades and analyzing data from all 50 states found no statistically significant correlation between higher immigrant populations and increased crime rates; in some cases, immigration was associated with a decrease in certain crimes.
Incarceration Rates: Undocumented immigrants are less likely to be incarcerated than U.S.-born individuals.
Specific Cases: While high-profile crimes committed by undocumented immigrants have received significant media and political attention (such as the murder of Laken Riley), these isolated incidents do not indicate a widespread, general crime wave or “thousands” of deaths nationwide caused by this population.
By pasting together a disparate patch work of single issue voting blocks.
They latched on to abortion to win the religious block away from the dems, a party more aligned with traditional Christian values of charity. They pretend to care about the deficit to win over the fiscal conservative voting block, even though their record is terrible on that issue. And they used to appeal to traditional moderate republicans by being pro business, free trade etc…
Trump is tossing the recipe around quite a bit by adding blue collar workers, and the xenophobes, so the new formula is a little more complicated.
But Republicans for the last 50 years have always had to win by banding together a few groups as their policies have never been perceived - right or wrong - as being great for the whole country.
No they weren’t. Lots of them were here legally waiting for their asylum hearings with work permits, checkin in with their appointed immigration officials as required by law.
They came across ILLEGALLY! Now they’re back where they came from and have the opportunity to do it LEGALLY. The spots in our court system are for those that came here LEGALLY and are LEGALLY applying for asylum. Why, WHY should they be allowed to take cuts in front of those that did it LEGALLY?
You do realize that making a false official statement is a criminal act under 18 USC. The coached claim is a false official statement given to government officials, which should be punished with felony incarceration, then permanent removal.
These claims of people coaching asylum speakers are hyperbole. I’m sure it’s happened, but it’s not some systemic plot.
I’m for major immigration reform, top to bottom.
My pointing out that these people are here legally is not an endorsement for the process that allows them to be here working legally. I think the whole system is totally screwed up. Doesn’t change the fact that if they have a work permit, they followed the laws, dumb as they are, and are in fact here legally.
