You do realize that the counties that are beating us in education have national education systems? You can’t on one hand rail against the Federal government as being inherently incapable while pointing to Federal governments that are capable.

That Americans pick the wrong people for the job does not mean the job can’t be done,

There was a poster on this (or the former, don’t recall) board who scoffed at the idea that the US could learn something from the Finnish education system.

My thinking has changed. I think we should increase the DoED budget ten-fold. Local districts are too stupid to educate our children. We need to strip their funding and send it to Washington, where it will do some good.

Having a national system has nothing to do with how well their students are performing vs hours.

We graduating a lot of HS Seniors that are barely competent at an 8th grade level.

Maybe we need to set some hard standards and teach accordingly and actually fail the little darlings when they fail to meet those standards instead of massaging their egos and pushing them out the door with a diploma that means little more than that they showed up?

Academic success is significantly a product of who a child’s parents are and how they are raised. Inner city schools have the same outcomes decade after decade because the quality of the parents don’t change. And it’s no surprise that US academic performance is in decline as the number of children born in the United States in poverty and or to a single mother is almost 50%. (Welfare now accounts for almost 50% of all US births)

What is the DOE doing that couldn’t be done better and more cheaply by simply dividing up their entire budget and sending it to the states in the form of education grants?

Completely agree. Federal department of education is a complete waste of money. The fact is though as a former educator I can tell you that a lot of the ■■■■ that comes out of the state department of education (at least in NJ) was also a complete waste.

Only the fact it’s next to impossible to get an education load that is not guaranteed by the state or federal gov’t.

The average college student has no credit history, no job, no collateral which all make them very high risk.

If your parents are willing to consign for you and have excellent credit and connections you might get one but unlike traditional student loans interest starts accumulating immediately and the monthly payments start immediately as well instead of neither starting until you graduate.
