The state of Florida is now allowing former felons to vote in local and national elections; permitting upwards of 1.4 million individuals to register in a pivotal, battleground swing-state.

“The right to vote was restored for most Florida felons as of Tuesday, increasing the pool of eligible voters by as many as 1.4 million people in a battleground state infamous for its narrow margins in key elections,” writes the Associated Press.

“We are encouraging our members to celebrate,” said the president of the Florida Rights Restoration Coalition. “Our members are going into the supervisor of elections with their loved ones. And that is very key— with their loved ones— because we really want to highlight that concept of love.”

The rules that dictate which residents are allowed to vote were changed last November when 65% of Floridians approved ‘Amendment Four,’ enfranchising former felons who have “done their time and completed the terms of their probation and parole.”

The law still bars those convicted of murder or sexual crimes from voting.
