Sen. Rand Paul vowed to support President Trump’s pick to join the Supreme Court Monday, saying he will vote to confirm Justice Brett Kavanaugh when his confirmation hearing comes before the United States Senate.

Paul praised the Commander-in-Chief’s nominee in a written statement released Monday afternoon, saying Kavanaugh “will carefully adhere to the Constitution” and will take “individual liberty seriously.”

“I believe he will carefully adhere to the Constitution and will take his job to protect individual liberty seriously,” Paul said in a statement.

Paul was widely regarded as a possible “swing vote” against Trump’s pick; leaving Sen. Collins and Murkowski as potential obstacles in Kavanaugh’s nomination process.

Paul was highly critical of Kavanaugh’s stance on government surveillance, adding he hopes to speak with the nominee regarding “data collection.”

“I have expressed my concern over Judge Kavanaugh’s record on warrantless bulk collection of data and how that might apply to very important privacy cases before the Supreme Court,” said Paul.
