Theyâre giving Fs to first graders now? Iâd like to know more about a âvocabulary assessmentâ for first graders that results in a letter grade. The correct thing to do there is to TEACH THE KID SOME VOCABULARY- not send home an F. First grade.
Itâs words like Cat, Car, Bike, Dog, and they have to write the word and then draw a line to the picture that goes with the word. Itâs a spelling vocab test. My wife gives them the word, they spell it and then they match the definition picture to the spelling word. Itâs not rocket surgeryâŚShe didnât draw the lines to the pictures. So she got half credit. It is three or four wordsâŚspelling counted for more than getting the definition correct. The girl didnât even try doing the proper definition. They did a practice test the day before, and this was clearly explained then as well. Girl just got careless and either forgot or didnât do it.
OKâŚso our school system has this ridiculous stringency standardâŚMy wifeâs first graders are supposed to be reading at a third grade level when they leave first grade. These standards have nothing to do with how much the student has learnedâŚthese benchmarks are designed to keep from paying her money. She needs to have all of her students at a certain pointâŚshe has to show a certain percentage of growthâŚso they put these benchmarks on these kids at a very early ageâŚand it does nothing to help the studentsâŚbut it affects the teachers evaluation and thus what kind of raise or bonus they get.
And it is also to supply the school system with an effective assessment not just of educational skills but of social skills such as following directions being able to complete simple tasks. That F could be an early sign of a learning disabilityâŚso it has to be documented.
Are you a school teacher @Munimula1? I am not but My father, Mother, wife and Son are, and I know what is and isnât when it comes to education.
I agree. What the heck happened to the kids she accused? Can you even IMAGINE the uproar in the home this caused?
An apology doesnât undo damage. People who pull attention seeking stunts like this at the expense of other peopleâs well being shouldnât get away with a slap on the wrist.
