They are not. They just won’t allow you to kill it, just like they won’t allow you to kill it after it’s born. Birth is a natural consequence of a successful pregnancy. Abortion is not.

Fact is… life at conception isn’t based on science. It’s morality. Religious.
Different religions define what “alive” means. There is no consensus in science.
