Very interesting article, I feel for the guy.
A friend of mine used to race dirt track with “off the shelf” cars, I forget the official name for it, but there’s an entire industry. He would rev the car to 2000 rpm, he had a seventies Chevy Nova, and advance the timing until the engine started to knock an then back it off a little. That gave him maximum performance for that style of racing and he was just nuts enough to win sometimes LOL, and that’s what it takes to win in auto racing. Near complete reckless abandon, you can’t win consistently without it.
