My nephew was interested in computer software and hardware as a kid. After high school, he took some technical courses on computers and was noticed and hired for his abilities. He has been working on and managing computer systems for large companies since then. My brother gave him the money saved for college and he used it to buy a house about 15 years ago (which of course has appreciated significantly since then ). Whether he would have “broadened his horizons” in college I can’t say, but there is always the opportunity to do that outside of college if one wishes.
Economically, I’m pretty sure he made the right decision. Being better at doing something that is needed more than most people is likely better job security than a degree.
