We enacted sanctions and condemned that action as well. I don’t think we sent military aid iirc. Do you disagree with our response?

Why is it implausible to believe that he was always going to take Ukraine?

I think the position being taken is not a moral one, but a realist one.
Russia marched into Ukraine. Sanctions weren’t going to stop Putin from ordering it to be done.
So…we either accept the outcome of that aggression, or we fight.
It really is that simple.
Sure we can give Ukraine weapons and help them hold out a while and hope it turns into a quagmire.
But the outcome is the same.

Understood, but this needs to be said explicitly if we are to thoughtfully discuss alliances and obligations.
If this is the position being taken, then the US pulling out of NATO means Putin can have whatever he wants because…well, all of Europe will essentially be Ukraine…
