Should tariffs be refunded back to importers or to American people

With hundreds of billions of dollars already collected which the SCOTUS ruled on that was unconstitutional. What should be done with those billions? Return it back to importers who had factored in the tariffs fees…or to people that bought those products?

  • Refund to importers/companies
  • Refund the American people

There is no right or wrong answers here.

Personally I think American people should receive refunds since since importers would be double-compensated.

Put it towards the debt.

I don’t believe that’s an option…but that’s out of my pay grade. Money has to be returned if it’s was illegally gain.

You have to pay for something when you break it too; yet here Iran is, ready to go ■■■■ themselves.

Well I guess it depends on if you believe tariffs are paid for by the country importing the goods, by the company importing the goods, or by the people who buy the imported goods.

Remember when I think Amazon was going to add to each product the amount of tariff levied on it? To me that would be a clear cut way to repay buyers. If you bought a product that added a visible tariff fee to each product.. it would be on that company to refund the tax once they get it from the government.

otherwise it would be pretty hard to know exactly which company raised prices due to tariffs. We can assume they did but they may say differently.

Yeah…that’s tough one. Reason why I started this poll. I don’t believe companies/importers swallowed those loses…no pun intended.
But if those companies did raised prices to offset tariff fees, they will in fact be doubled compensated at Buyer/Taxpayers expense.

Thus why I believe it should be returned to American people. Just thinking out loud here.

The company I work for imports a lot from China, mostly PPE and a lot of nitrile gloves.

We had to raise our prices due to the tariffs. I do not think we will be getting any refunds, which means neither will our customers.

I am not sure what to do with all the tariffs that were collected.

Exactly right and this is how I believe it will be handled. The companies who publicly stated they raised prices to due tariffs will get the refund and may be shamed into refunds.

The companies who didn’t publicly stated they raised prices due to tariffs will be paid double AND they have no incentive to lower prices in the future.

this solution will suck but I think the only way this works is if we divide the total collected via tariffs by the number of tax payers and have the irs give the refund.

I recall early on some companies stating they were going to eat the tariffs (or part of them) for a while to stay competitive. It would be practically impossible to trace who ate how much of the tariffs.
Some arbitrary solution may happen, but that’s all it would be - arbitrary.

“Take” from who, Weedhopper?

I paid too much for coffee and Argentine beef.
Send me my check .

Best method: use exactly the $ 2,600-per-family check method Trump was advocating in the first place. :smiling_face_with_sunglasses:

Exactly.

A system that cannot cut spending by 1% across the board should not refund anything.

Spending has gone critical.

Agreed. That would be my first choice. However, the problem with that is if the dems get into power again, they’ll spend it all.

If they give it to the people, it would probably be only for a certain income range which I wholeheartedly disagree with. IF they give it to the people, I would agree if it was distributed equally.

If they refund it to the importers/companies that would be foolish. In my business, I had to pay tariff fees, some with just prices raised due to tariffs, some clearly stated on the invoice. I passed the increases to my customers.

Therefore, IMO, our Country would reap the most benefit if applied to our debt.

The last time they shelled out hundreds of billions of dollars to everyone, eggs exceeded 30 bucks a case.

It will get spent RIGHT NOW.

why do y’all still think republicans are fiscally responsible?

:up_arrow: THAT. :up_arrow:

Golden rule. Fedgov holds that gold. Keep it and pay down the debt with it.

simple. The companies who say they will initiate Tariff Free sales will get their tariff refunds first otherwise they will have to wait the many months or even years before the money gets returned to them. Or they can employ one of the Lutnick family companies tariff recovery rackets.
