Problem is that Taiwan knew of human to human transmission while China and WHO claimed otherwise.

I always like this thinking.

We saw the countries that border China, who experienced both SARS and MERS, acting with lightning speed once news started dribbling out of China.

We saw China, despite their assertions that there was no human to human transmission, building pretty large hospitals from scratch.

These ought to have been strong signals something was up…but because the WHO and China were telling a different story, we didn’t “see” these signals.

Should be a learning for next time…we’ll see if it is.

I’m blaming the WHO for the failures of the WHO.

Given we cannot act until we know, I fail to see any egregious errors. Decisions were made on the information we had. Those decisions seem to have been appropriate at the time they were made.

no. the states are precluded constitutionally, the federal government would only need to file suit.

don’t get me wrong, the state governors are right to make the orders, the feds are right to leave it to the states. the states should determine when its best for their state to come out of it. what the northeastern states are attempting (regional pacts) is patently unconstitutional.

what’s more, it is the federal government, at the behest of the states that declare “disasters” and “emergencies”. it requires a federal declaration, that is what legally empowers the governors and the president to act. remove the declaration, and the authority is gone.

does the reopening need to be handled regionally? yes, in some places, it does. and it needs to be coordinated through the feds.

and? from what we knew at the time the risk was still low. at the time we did not know that persons could be spreading it around asymptomatically. we were working under the assumption that people who could spread the decease would exhibit symptoms, hence, we asked anyone who exhibited symptoms to self quarantine. Maybe we should have just arrested anyone who passed by anyone who had passed by someone else who may have seen someone down the block who may or may not have brushed by anyone at the airport?
