He received Fredrick Douglas multiple times in the White House multiple times, once if my memory is correct when it was crowded after his inauguration. He wanted and valued Douglas’ opinion.
His goal at the start was to preserve the Union and limit the spread of slavery, but as the war progressed this changed as well.
He was not an abolitionist, but a politician balancing many different viewpoints on slavery. Some of his views when viewed from our perspective now, may be considered racist, but I have a hard time calling him a racist.

With LIBs, everything is about race. Why would you be any different?
It was created for white people by white people at a time when black people were property.
Today sure… it covers all races in that are US citizens. Historically though… not so much.
That’s the symbolism we assign to it… we can assign the same symbolism to any song.
Living in the past LIBs are. They have nothing to offer, so they keep trying to live in the past where blacks had no rights. That makes them seem relevant.
