4:05 PM ET – Newt Gingrich, former Speaker of the House, author of Trump’s America: The Truth about Our Nation’s Great Comeback, his latest NY Times bestseller, has written an op-ed on the SOTU tonight:
Following on an election in which “Make America Great Again” was a primary theme and the campaign hits said MAGA instead of Trump there is a certain logic to President Trump emphasizing that Americans should move beyond vicious partisanship and “choose greatness” for their country.
This concept of American Greatness has deep roots from the Founding Fathers through Abraham Lincoln to Reverend Martin Luther King Jr. If you read the historic August 28, 1963 “I Have a Dream Speech” you will be astonished how much Reverend King was calling on Americans to live up to the promise of America’s greatness and the commitment to equality under the law inherent in the Declaration of Independence (“We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness.”)
Unlike the modern left, Reverend King was not challenging us to abandon the concept of America but instead was challenging us to live up to the potential required, as he put it, “if America is to be a great nation.”

The latest in the Northam scandal, now addresses the sexual abuse allegations against Lt. Governor Fairfax:
The Lieutenant Governor of Virginia, Justin Fairfax, appeared to suggest Monday that supporters of embattled Gov. Ralph Northam may be trying to push a false story about him sexually assaulting a woman to block him from becoming governor of the state.
“Does anybody think it’s any coincidence that on the eve of potentially my being elevated that that’s when this smear comes out?” Fairfax told an impromptu press conference in Virginia when asked by a reporter if he thought Northam’s “team” was behind a sexual assault allegation published in a conservative website.
Fairfax — who later denied he was pointing the finger at the governor’s camp — will take the top post if Northam resigns. That’s an increasing possibility after Democrats from his state and nationally have called on him to step aside in the wake of racist photos from his medical school yearbook resurfacing. 5:05 PM ET – RNC Spokesperson Kayleigh McEnany, author of The New American Revolution: The Making of a Populist Movement and Jeffrey Lord, Former associate political director in the Reagan administration, columnist and author of the book What America Needs: The Case for Trump, talk about the grouchy democrats who already reacting to the SOTU:
Schumer, during a Senate floor speech on Tuesday, predicted Trump would use his prime time remarks to make policy promises that he won’t keep.
“Knowing this president, he will then make some bold new promises and not even make an attempt to fulfill them,” Schumer said. “The man has so little integrity that a promise that he makes at the State of the Union means nothing the next morning.”
Trump is expected to emphasize unity in his speech, and urge Congress to work together on key policy issues.
Schumer, however, dismissed the likely rhetoric, saying Trump was “ignoring the reality of his administration” and would “weave a web of fiction.” (h/t The Hill)
