This case is a direct threat to our democracy by removing campaign finance limits. This will let big donors pour unlimited cash into elections and completely obliterate voters voices
The current caps of up to $3.9m are already sufficient so the only reason to remove this is so the uber wealthy on BOTH sides can benefit.
Citizens United was bad enough but this just pushes the US further into corporatization.
You are right the US is a constitutional republic but its built on democratic principles.
Citizens vote to choose representation from those on the ballot and they expect this to count far more than the unlimited money a corporation will be able to inject into an election.
You know that calling the US a “democracy” is recognized shorthand (for want of a better word) used by constitutional scholars, politicians, and pretty much everyone and does not imply mob rule by direct democracy. The Constitution more than prevents this which in turn ensures stability and not majority tyranny (as many refer to democracy as).
Not sure what you mean about media getting money. This is about letting the uber wealthy and corporations pour unlimited cash into elections which ordinary voters csnnot possibly counter. dwarfing ordinary voters. Current limits already give these big player more than enough power so removing this block entirely hands our system completely over to the corporations and mega wealthy.
Citizens United started this bad path and if this new case is successful it will just allow more corporate control.
Please lets stop trying to make this about wordplay and focus on the actual issue I made a thread on.
Come on man, your better than this. If your not interested in the topic thats cool but your actual opinions when you share them are worthwhile and interesting.
I am just tired of arguing with people on here (yeah i do it as well and I acted like an arse more times than I can remember) and trying to do better and engage in actual discussion.
Now we have got past your original concern focused on a single word, are you saying that the SC is not reviewing a request to remove limits on what political donations corporations can make?
If I am misunderstanding the issue then educate me.
If you think this is a none issue thats cool as well.
The difference between a democracy and a republic is very important when it comes to addressing rights, such as the 1st Amendment. As seen in the Citizens United decision.
IMO…there should be lower caps on monetary donations. I hope that SCOTUS comes to that conclusion also and enacts one. Our elections should never be about which side is the richest.
