I was curious about “In a Violent Nature”, but on Youtube there is a clip that shows all the killings. It’s brutal to the point of being a parody. No thanks.

A lot of them don’t have an interesting enough story and premise to back them up.

I always think back to the original Texas Chainsaw Massacre. It’s a good movie not because of horror or violent elements, but because it’s a genuinely interesting story.

Yeah, that’s one of my faves and does have a decent plot. The cinematography, atmosphere, and score make that one a masterpiece as well. I watch that one a couple times a year. Tobe Hooper peaked with that one for sure.

I always thought they were dull. That level of violence is only good if there is a good story to carry it. Like FEAR on PC had crazy levels of violence and psychological torture but I enjoyed that game because it had an interesting story to carry it.

I hated the Saw franchise and the idiotic centipede man etc. that’s all gross and unnecessary but i think there is an over reaction to all violence in horror that’s happening in this discussion. Based in part on disliking modern horror

For fun, see “Strange Darling” and “Substance.” Is there anything good about these, besides being attempts at turning sick stories into artsy madness hidden behind the claim of “Dark Humor.” It’s not just about disliking them and it’s not about dark humor. They are both perverse and now Mainstream.

There is little difference in the violence of Natural Born Killers and strange darling. It’s been mainstream for 30 plus years.

I think you disliked the movie and i have had that with several movies. I totally get it. But it’s part of the mainstream for decades.

I loved Natural Born Killers–or “Caligula” which I hated, but they weren’t Mainstream–they were sick but original. Now copycat idiots want to wallow in sickness to degrade anything they see.

He has made classics but for the post part he is formulaic. And most importantly All of this movies are extrenely violent and almost all sexually violent. So i am not sure where this distaste for violence is coming from suddenly.

I have hated many Tarantino movies, for the constant gratuitous violence- even though most his violence is tongue in cheek and geeky. I liked the Nazi movie for the twist and I loved Once upon a time in Hollywood. He redeemed himself with that one. Pulp Fiction was unique and funny at the time. I watched Strange Darling at his theater in Hollywood and there was an unnerving ovation at the end that was repelling.

Not to step on the toes of @travisg but I just watched the newest version of Salems Lot on Max and its not half bad.

Salems Lot was the first horror book I ever read as a teenager and it scared the crap out of me. Genuinely gave me nightmares and is still one of my all time favorite horror novels.

For me I have always thought of Salems Lot as the spiritual sequel to Bram Stokers Dracula. The king of vampires relocates from the old world to the new world and starts to take over/destroy a small town in Maine. If you read the book there is some interesting backstory which makes it apparent that the move to Salems Lot has been planned carefully and has been years in the making.

But back to the new Max version of Salems Lot. This actually is not a bad movie. It moves along at a fast pace if not a bit too fast. Normally I gripe that a movie could benefit from a shorter running time but for once this is a movie that with an extra 30 minutes could have been elevated into something really special as that would have allowed for more character development and a slower burn of the vampire take over. I also really like how its set in 1975 which is the same year as Kings novel was originally published.

Not sure this meets my defintion of horror, its more creepy and disturbing in parts but thats okay.

The abduction and murder of the first vampire victim is very well done and disturbing because you see it from their perspective. I want to avoid spoilers so watch it and you will see what I mean. Plus the kid vampires are done well and not cheesy. In fact the performances by the child actors are really good and feel natural (I find most kids in movies annoying)

There are a Couple of plot holes that made me scratch my head which with a slightly longer running time could have been avoided but its not War and Peace we are watching.

Overall a solid adaptation of Stephen Kings classic novel with great performances from a talented bunch of actors (Bill Sadler, Lewis Pullman, Bill Camp and Mackenzie Leigh).

This is an ideal starter horror movie for your kids that are just entering their teens . Oh and it has a banging soundtrack.

Love how it started with Gordon Lighfoot, and the acting was real good. Disappointed they made Straker a weak caretaker, he has supernatural strength. It felt a bit like Lost Boys, Meets Salems Lot 1981, meets Count Orlok. It’s def a fun watch if you don’t nitpick it through the lense of the original book. Overall well done.

Most of his movies rely on a very specific and somewhat tired formula. But it is entertaining because they always have very enjoyable characters in them. That’s his real strength honestly. Not story making stories, but creating very interesting characters.

Like Steve in Django is such a fascinating character on every level.

Salem’s Lot was not bad. Afterwards I watched the older version with James Mason, which was better than I rememberd it. More characterization, but a little stiff.

Tarantino speaks to me because of his love of sleazy, trashy flicks that were fit for nothing but grindhouse and drive-in theaters. Anybody else a fan of trash like Caged Heat, Mr. Majestyk, Vigilante, I the Jury, Black Belt Jones, Switchblade Sisters?
