And LBJ was a product of the south completely. Most southern Dems were racist, but most joined the Republican party.
Reagen was born and lived during a time when racism was not only publicly accepted but enforced by the government.
Give me a list of elected Southern Democrats who joined the Republican Party. I can think of one- Strom Thurmond. If you claim “most” did you must know of hundreds or thousands of them.
So what? So was every other president.
I’m reminded how defensive a FoxNews host got when the concept of a black Santa was brought up.
Must protect the whiteness of Santa.
my point is i’m not really shocked someone born in 1911 was racist to some extent, I would be more shocked if they were not because at the time he grew up racism was acceptable and enforced by the government.
though Reagan might have be personal bias, I don’t think he governed in a racist way.
Who ended that streak? Trump? Or does it continue to this day.
Myself. The streak ended with 41. And began again with 45.

And it was supported by the NRA.

That was before the second amendment.
Reagan only got caught making one statement? LBJ was racist too? Racism trials? Abraham Lincoln?
Why is it so hard simply to admit that Ronald Reagan was a racist?
He used one of the biggest cliches in racism.
His racism is indisputable.
Some facts are politically inconvenient. They remain facts.
Adults used to see rowdy kids climbing trees, etc. and call them monkeys.
Perfectly acceptable as long as the kids were white.
If a black kid was in amongs them, suddenly it’s racist - even though the individual refers to all kids as monkeys…
As for this particular sentence of Reagan’s - he’s talking about Tanzanians, not wearing shoes, dancing in the middle of the UN.
Could he have just been disgusted with the reaction of that particular group of people, acting like “monkeys” (as in any adults who dance in a building without shoes on?)
Does one comment - provoked by rowdy behavior by people who happen to be black - make a man racist?
When he makes an unprovoked comment about blacks - then there might be something in it.
Cool story, bro. Lets repeal this racist legislation that prevents black Americans from exercising their God-given right to bear arms.

Parents call children monkeys all the time.
Just like people refer to black holes, hanging people out to dry, etc, without being racist!

Exactly. It’s as if rushing to the nearest half-dozen tangents will erase Reagan’s words.
If somebody started a thread on LBJ’s racism, I’d take the path of least resistance by typing, “Yes, he was a racist,” and then, because I’d have little to add, I’d probably move on to the next thread.
I wouldn’t take it as an opportunity to talk about Andrew Jackson or any other president, because I’m aware how partisan and desperate I’d end up looking.
It’s also a little funny that I am seeing more antagonism directed toward people admitting Reagan was a racist than toward Reagan himself.

Tell me.
And actually, I don’t care what you “deem him”.
You made a point to emphasize “one statement”. I asked you for a threshold number. Why then would you ask me? I don’t speak for you.

I have never seen someone call a bunch of kids playing “monkeys”; did you really just write that page of a post defending an obvious racist comment based on THAT?
Cool. Seems a bit high…but I understand where you are at. Thanks.
Wah ■■■■■■■ wah.
I voted for Reagan. I wouldn’t have if this recording had come out in 1979. It’s possible millions of others wouldn’t have as well. What a different world this would surely be, good, bad or otherwise
