Romania bans candidate from election

It’s amazing the EU calls itself democratic with things like this being approved of by the elites.
They said it’s because of Russian interference. Just like the dems in the USA during Trump.
Obviously, the left on both side of the atlantic only believe in democracy if they can win.

We never saw any proof of Russian interference in our elections.

What does this have to do with the EU? The EU does not legislate elections in member counties. Even as a member of the EU each country is still a sovereign nation with total control over its internal elections.

So, your complaint is that you don’t like the title? Ok. We got it. Now what do you think of a government banning their opponent?

I think its wrong but you tried to equate this to the EU which is trying to spin this as an issue for the EU which it is not.

Obviously if a candidate does not qualify to run then thats different. The UK does not allow anyone who has ever been declared bankrupt run as an MP. But no candidates no matter how distasteful their politics maybe should be barred from running.

You’d think leftists in Romania would have learned their lesson in 1989.

The EU is backing up the claim with investigation, and we know Romanian intel is connected to all of the EU. KInd of like our five eyes intel that all ganged up on Trump …

Brussels regularly punishes member states when elections go “the wrong way”.

The pretext is “protecting democracy and freedom” and “fighting corruption”. Curiously those standards are never applied the huge sums going to Ukraine. Also nations who are most closely allied with narratives from Brussels have leaders with some of the lowest approval ratings from their own voters.

I did not. It’s not my thread. You should not have had to be forced in to admitting that this type of authoritarian tyranny is not acceptable. Your response to it is weak.

Sure it is. Nothing is ever good enough for you.

It was a weak assed reply by any definition.

(I’m guessing it’s ok to say “assed” since we hear it on air at Fox.)

So EU doesn’t hold any democratic values? Is that what you’re telling us?

Of course they do but the EU has not created the situation in Romania.

individual countries are free to leave the EU if they so wish, just like the UK did but as the UK is finding out now, the benefits far outweigh the negatives.

Obviously…this is different.

You are of course right but they do have some power over the members decisions including political decisions.

Didnt they withhold funds from Hungary over Orbans actions

Who is the head of the dem party in Romania? Good gosh.

Brussels blocked over 10 billion euros to punish Hungarian voters. The EU only released it when Orban threatened to veto project Ukraine.

Theoretically member states have the right to leave the EU with three years’ notice. Since the BREXIT vote the solution has been to subvert elections to prevent another BREXIT from occurring.

The Soviet Union had a similar setup. According to the constitution, the republics that made up the Soviet Union were free leave. That is why elections were rigged to make sure that only Communists committed to staying in the Soviet Union were allowed on the ballot for 70 years. When free elections were finally allowed, all the republics voted to leave and the Soviet Union ended.
