He was excellent in Tombstone. Should’ve won an Oscar for it.

The only guy to ever bring a CUP to a gunfight,…AND WIN!!!

Here are the details. Battled throat cancer in 2014. Recovered though weakened by it. Pneumonia was listed as cause.

Pretty solid actor. I am curious about the name Val. Is it short for Valentino?

Rest well and condolences to his family.

Answered my question. In his case not shortened. Born Val Edward Kilmer in LA to Christian Scientist parents.

Is Val Kilmer short for anything?
As Valentine and Valerie evolved over time, the shortened form Val emerged as a standalone name. In modern-day usage, the name Val continues to be popular and widely adopted. It can be utilized for both males and females, representing a versatile choice for parents seeking an elegant and concise name.

Same here Doc Holiday, everyone on the set and they were some big names said he stole the show and became the character

Check out one of his early roles in Real Genius from 1985.

He was awesome in Tombstone.
Before he did that, I never would of thought of portraying Doc Holliday the way he did. After . . . I can’t imagine doing it any other way.

The Ghost and the Darkness is another great one
although its greatness was a mix of Hopkins’ direction and Kilmer’s acting.

I mean…… that’s an interesting take.

It is considered one of the worst films ever made and specifically because of Hopkins direction

It got a bunch of razzie nominations even

Wow i just checked that movie made a come back especially on imdb. When it just came out it got ripped for various reasons

It bravely portrayed the lions as the bad guys.

That is historically accurate.
It could not have been done without Kilmer’s acting.
(but it would never have happened without Hopkins deciding to make it that way. Kilmer never could have done that without Hopkins wanting it that way.)

Hopkins said in a 1998 interview that the film ā€œwas a mess… I haven’t been able to watch it.ā€

I’ll have to check that out. I don’t know many of his 80 movies past the obvious ones like Top Gun. I remember he made a convincing Jim Morrison in the Doors movie

It does get a little weak toward the end,
Hopkins tried to create a great crescendo with a fierce battle against the sole remaining lion.

The film will draw you in (well it would if we hadn’t spoiled it) and make you think. . . . the end is kind of a disappointment but that has nothing to do with Kilmer’s portrayal. That happens because the film made its point half way through and, they couldn’t figure out how to end it.

I had not thought about this until your post. I agree with @FreeAndClear on this movie.

What will Maverick do now without his Sea Daddy?

A good actor, with the ability to play many different character types. I too am partial to his anti-hero performance in Tombstone, but enjoyed just about everything I saw him in. Hollywood lost a real pro. RIP

Yeah he was a good actor. But back in his hey day, he was super hard to work with and a bit of a prima donna. The Island of Dr. Moreau was defined by the insanity of Val Kilmer and Marlon Brando both being impossible to work with and Kilmer was so insane that when he filmed his last scene the director told him if he ever saw him again he was going to punch him in the face.

To be fair, he apparently got easier to work with and more humble as he aged. But young Val Kilmer was despised in Hollywood. It’s kind of seen in his filmography. He didn’t do much between 1996 (when The Island of Dr Moreau was released) and about 2007. He was soft black listed at that time.
