Then you have the wording of the census clause itself, which uses “numbers” and “persons,” not “citizens,” or “legal residents.” You also have decades of precedent.

Umm and no, that is not what the constitution demands, constitutionally you have to count permanent resident legal aliens, not illegal or temporary ones.

Well it was called the “3/5 compromise” for a reason. It certainly wasn’t the 3/5ths who were being compromised with, rather just compromised in general.

Do you know why Southerners wanted slaves counted as whole persons?

I believe the 3/5ths compromise was not about saying that 1 slave was only 3/5ths of a person. It was saying that only 3/5ths of the total slave population could be counted.

It was still bad because 40% of the slave population were considered a person AT ALL.

Either way it was a ploy to try to keep the southern states from secession… we see how that worked out.

It was a ploy to keep the south from taking over the House.
