Yes. Russia is most interested in the Russian-speaking areas in the east and along the Black Sea.

We are more likely to see Russian tanks in Odessa than Kyiv or points west.

What??? You don’t know history.

Question: what would we say if Belarus, Ukraine and Crimea were former member of NATO and Russia was trying to convince them to join the New Union of Soviet Republics?

We allow them to leave. And we don’t put 120,000+ troops on their border to encourage them to stay. But it’s a false argument. Ukraine(and for the record for everyone hear, not ā€œthe Ukraineā€, Ukraine) is a ā– ā– ā– ā– ā– ā– ā–  independent country. They make their own decisions. I grant the strategic decision of Russia taking Crimea as an option for them once we flipped Ukraine from non military Russia puppet state to anti Russia military power and in desperation they decided to salvage Crimea. But that doesn’t excuse it. I just understand it.

If Denmark wanted to leave, they vote and decide to leave. No big deal. This ā– ā– ā– ā–  happens in Ukraine and I think Finland real quick joins NATO.

Would we?

The Ukraine The Ukraine The Ukraine The Ukraine The Ukraine The Ukraine

We would be wise to not allow Finland to join.

They share a border with Russia. Even worse, that border is literally within just a few dozen miles of Saint Petersburg, Russia’s second largest city, it’s cultural heart, and the home of the northern fleet.

Russia would never tolerate it. They would never tolerate NATO forces that close to their second largest city. Hell Saint Petersburg is within range of American artillery and short range missiles from the border.

If anything, Finnish independence is better served by allowing the Finns to do what they’ve always done. They serve as neutral ground between NATO and Russia. They served that role during the Cold War for NATO and the Soviet Union. A place where the two sides intelligence services could discuss matters privately without alerting the rest of Europe or more nationalist minded military types.

Finland is sort of like Switzerland. Except they are in a more vulnerable position. But their strategy of official neutrality between the West and the East while allowing both sides to have a neutral meeting ground has served them well since World War II.

How about Mexico or Canada?

It’s a bigger movement in the Ukraine than few want to admit. As someone above mentioned earlier Stepan Bandera has been recently included as a national hero there. He was and unsavory character to put it nicely during the Holocaust.

My wife’s family lives in western Ukraine just 60 miles or so from the Poland border so if invaded if it reached that far they probably would have time to get out we tried to get them to come over here and stay until it blows over they wouldn’t hear of leaving. Needless to say the wife is talking worriedly everyday to her family but there is a sense at least in the Ukraine that it’s media hype and their won’t be an invasion.

If Canada wants to leave NATO there’s a mechanism for it. We’re lucky that we have incredibly good relations with our neighbor to the north. Longest undefended border in the world. It’s almost like we don’t try to keep Canada with us at the point of a gun. Weird. Also, you do know Mexico isn’t in NATO right?

And thanks for this. Really helped the dialogue.

Not just leave NATO, join the NUSR.

Yes, I know Mexico isn’t in NATO. Do you not have an imagination?

Canada is a special case. We are siblings and have always considered each other as brothers. After the War of 1812, the Canadian/American relationship wasn’t really tested again except for some economic issues that crop up every few decades.

By comparison, Eastern Europe was basically a warzone for much of its existence. A lot of people conquered each other multiple times. There’s really bad blood between all of them.

Managing Real Politik here in North America is natural and easy. It’s much more difficult for Russia and it’s neighbors because of all the bad blood.

We would overthrow their new pro-Russian government so fast that no one would have time to finish their coffee.

Is that what you think. Why?

He’s already made out to be a aggressor here, he’s already will be hit with economic sanctions…why stop half way?

Seriously people. None of you are thinking clear.

He’s going to Kiev.

That’s who libs are arming because of Europe expansionism.

I’m bookmarking this. He would never be stupid enough to go for Kyiv.
