My point was this. We’ve been paying welfare, disproportionately to blacks, for decades and the people living off of welfare have made zero progress. It has actually been a bane to poor people. Another payment is not going to help black people, ONLY letting go of the past will help. I owned no slaves and no one alive WAS a slave. The United States fought a bloody war to end slavery. The fact of the matter is that no one alive owes no one alive for slavery. We need to move past it. . . and millions of black people have moved past it and are productive members of society, solidly in the middle class.

The south was the aggressor. They wanted to keep slaves. Period.

You can twist and distort history all you want but it doesn’t change the fact that we’ve been taught that the Civil War was about slavery. I think your history needs a bit of work, the south demanded that the North vacate their territory and the north refused. The aggression was from the North that refused to allow the South to leave the Union. The North could have reached a peace agreement and allowed the southern states to secede without a war. That wasn’t the goal.

As to being the liberator, of COURSE they get liberator status. People learn through history and thousands of years of human history had slavery. 80 years after this nation was founded, we abolished it. I don’t blame people for history and the founders plainly stated that there was no way to pull this country off without including slavery. . . even though they wanted to. That said, the system created allowed for the end of slavery less than a century later.

Welfare is not reparations for slavery. By raw numbers more white people are on welfare than black people.

By percentage of population more black people are on it… but is it BECAUSE of welfare or in SPITE of welfare? I argue the latter due to Jim Crow and slavery before it.

I suggest you read up on a bit of history as there’s a LONG history of fighting slavery from the founding of this nation. I think people forget the historical significance and the world wide effort to end slavery that goes back many decades and continues to today. 1865 was the culmination but from the beginning of this country, steps were taken to reduce and eventually abolish slavery.

The ultimate reparation would be federal tax exemption for all verified descendants of slaves. Former slave states could also offer the exemption to verified descendants of slaves who were slaves in their states and still live there. Let’s keep it for the life of the tax payer.

Would this apply to all verified descendants of slaves alive today, or to all descendants in perpetuity?

Also, would the proportion of one’s ancestors that were slaves impact the amount of reparations you receive? For instance if one could only demonstrate that a single great-great-great-grand parent was a slave would they receive as much as one that could show a much larger proportion of their family were slaves?

Additionally, what if one is wealthy, would there be a cutoff for reparations?

It seems to me that, although your ideas on what reparations would be have merit, fair implementation would be impossible. Why not focus on the legacy of of slavery and Jim Crow, and address poverty, both inner city and rural?
