Rep. Amash leaves the Republican party

I’m surprised he actually bit the bullet and did it, he’s been one of the few Republican house members making noise about the deficit and not giving a pass to the Trump admin on executive over-reach.

But I guess there really isn’t room for him in the party anymore. Get on board the Trump train or get out.

I doubt his leaving the GOP will achieve much unfortunately, your two party tribalism seems pretty entrenched.

“The Republican Party, I believed, stood for limited government, economic freedom and individual liberty — principles that had made the American Dream possible for my family,” he wrote. “In recent years, though, I’ve become disenchanted with party politics and frightened by what I see from it. The two-party system has evolved into an existential threat to American principles and institutions.”
He also pointed to George Washington’s farewell address, in which the first US President warned Americans of the dangers of partisanship.

“True to Washington’s fears, Americans have allowed government officials, under assertions of expediency and party unity, to ignore the most basic tenets of our constitutional order: separation of powers, federalism and the rule of law,” Amash said. “The result has been the consolidation of political power and the near disintegration of representative democracy.”"

i hope he runs against trump as a libertarian

Good for Amash. Actual conservatives are going to have an increasingly difficult time being associated with the GOP now that Trump has moved it further away from conservatism than ever. I suspect we will see more of this type of thing as time goes on.

It is simply extremely difficult, if not impossible, to be conservative these days and maintain ties with the GOP.

Irrelevant individual trying to get attention. Thanks to Donald the GOP is stronger than ever and the Democratic party is now in free fall, absolute disaster mode as it becomes increasingly radicalized by young socialists like Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez. Trump doesn’t need you, Amash, and neither does America - for every one of you who leaves, we take on three devoted patriots!

As do I. I am wondering if this is his opening position in order to do just that?

Those of us who still believe in conservatism will need to come up with a new thing to call ourselves. Because Donald Trump is now the standard bearer for modern conservatism.

The pettiness will never cease to sadden me. The President of the United States of America folks. On the day we are supposed to be united as one, in celebration of our Independence. Who here is proud right now?

That sentence should not be written in the first person from you.

Apron tugging personal attack. Well done. :+1:

I missed you, man.

Amash was always a NeverTrumper RINO. If he wants to run as a independent or a Democrat I couldn’t care less. I’m just glad he is no longer soiling the Republican party by being a member. Goodbye and good riddance, Amash.

Amash’s ratings were trash. Sad!

Amash is Jeff Flake V2.0. TDS all the way.

So now I can say with confidence again that there’s not a single Republican in DC with a spine.

I’d like to see Amash’s 2024/2028 Vegas betting odds for being president.

Here is his voting record…

By the way, I was wrong when I said that not a single Republican politician would stand up to the corruption and excess that Donald Trump brought to Washington DC.

There is one.

A principled conservative/libertarian. Of course there is no place for him in the GOP. It is Trump’s party. And any disloyalty to the king gets you excommunicated and labeled as having a derangement syndrome. Because obviously one must be deranged to oppose the king.

That ought to buy a couple minutes of network television face time for him.
