Rebirth, Karma (cause and effect) Fickleness, Psychology, and Samsara

Rather than documenting what Buddhist, Christian or Hindu scriptures say, I think that the title topic is rarely explained well enough to allow people to see it with clarity.

Wrong understanding about karma, wrong understanding about “reincarnation” and rebirth, wrong understanding about responsibility, grace and salvation takes some explanation.

Now in a case where people are born into terrible circumstances–blaming others is of no use. This is why FAITH is so important.

The more complex an explanation, the more confusing it is to understand with one’s life, so as to defeat shallow biases and see more deeply.

First I need to explain the meaning of the Japanese Buddhist, term, “ICHINEN”

Literally the term means, One-mind-moment. In any given moment a person has a certain “Ichinen” based on what is called, “mutual possession” of Lifestates. A word the helps understand this is the word “interpenetration”.

“Interpenetration,” means that each Mind-moment lifestate, contains inherently, all possible factors of, the other causal lifestates, related to the natural Law of cause and effect. It was defined as Three thousand lifestates in a single moment, “Ichinen Sanzen.”

When Jesus or Buddha, talked about “faith the size of a mustard seed” He is essentially talking about this principle. Where does the more faith based lifestates actually reside? Where does the essence of hell, hunger, animality, anger, humanity, rapture, learning, self-realization, Bodhisattva (mercy), Buddha/Enlightenment reside.

It is important to realize that the idea of a independent “soul” self or identity
is actually a misnomer. This is why Buddhism corrects the term “reincarnation,” because it leads to people thinking they are an independent self or soul. The term is “dependent origination,” All things are dependent on all other things. People are said to be swimming in the “Sea of Samsara” otherwise known as the wheel of birth and death. Liberation or salvation is do-able according to faith, prayer and practice. Resisting this law of cause and effect or slandering this Supreme Law is a bad, futile cause. At the same time getting a bad effect can teach a person what not to do and what to do and practice makes perfect no matter how ignorant a person is otherwise.

The term “soul” used in Buddhism or Christianity should include the disclaimer that no thing is “independent,” with a separate self in actuality. In terms of words, using the word is an expedient means. Just as no one is separate from God, the differentiation should really be found in the middle way–“neither a self, nor non-self.” strictly speaking. The use of the term “soul,” is really using poetic license.

If a person is born/reborn in a certain place/land, time/ gender/ identity, with such and such a mother and father, brother and sisters and other relations with such as such degrees of wealth or poverty, health of sickness—it is their “Ichinen” —their inner desire and will–it is like a karmic wind that makes unconscious and conscious choices. It is always the wind of karma or the accumulations and manifesting, of causes and effects made.

When people are born poor and sickly, in a terrible place to live or terrible situation, in a terrible time, as a particular person of a particular gender. that is their Ichinen. It is the result of very specific and real causes that lead to that effect. In other words that person’s will is for that to happen, not the result of some kind of punishment dished out by God or Buddha. Specific effects are very real, but neither God or Buddha has to sit there in the sky and calculate what to do with a person. The person is doing it too themselves due to various relationships and causal factors.

People literally choose their parents, place and time, sex and degree of suffering or happiness, of their birth, depending on causes made with their body, mouth or mind. It is only mystical and incomprehensible because of a person’s day to day ignorance.

Now based on what is said above, how could one view the people who wish to change their sex. They specifically chose who they would be, by their inner ichinen–unconsciously or not. Now they want to change midstream? This is very fickle. No doubt a person could want to be the opposite sex from their birth sex–NO MATTER what sex they are born. They are the best example of faithlessness and arguing with their own self, which is the same as slandering the Law of the universe.

A person literally can flip flop forever and end up in some very terrible realities. It is important to develop the enlightened mind beyond transient distinctions and the incessant forming of obsessional habits.

Fickleness is very vain.

Taking responsibility is the key.

Most every religious person has at one time or another, when being taught about religion, wondered how it is, that some babies could be born so unlucky and others, so much better off, as if God is playing dice with the universe and every being in it. It is a fundamental doubt that makes no sense to a person. This is because it DOES NOT make sense at all and defies cause and effect on any level. This is why it is fairly common to hear people object to religion entirely, because to them, that would mean GOD would be a fiendish , crazy, lunatic GOD, to be so cruel and evil as to allow so much evil in the world. It would be what people would expect from a devil, not a wonderful God. “God works in mysterious ways” is generally true, but not in this way.

Without getting too deep into the history of the controversies as the Christian Dogma was being put into canonical order and the various power struggles, one should look at all sides. When doing so, it becomes clear that some things may have been misunderstood. This is not only true in Christian history but also been true in all the world religions.

So fundamentally, to the question about inequality of babies, inequality of rebirth and causality, there is the obvious answer and even a superficial understanding of karma clears up the matter.

One extreme view India had/has a caste system that precluded people on the middle to lower rungs of the social ladder, from advancing because the karma gets interpreted as fate. Karma cannot be explained with such a negative grasp of cause and effect as to say it’s “fatalistic.”

If you stick your finger in fire it will burn but is it “fate” that someone would be so careless? No. It is cause and effect on every level.

So God is neither an evil sadist, nor is one’s Karmic station in life immutable.

One can actually practice and get into the rhythm of cause and effect, so as to keep striving for true enlightenment and see all things for themselves, at the deepest level, not merely as theory or dogma.

Sorry to say I don’t understand the concept of “choosing one’s parents”, although I have heard it before.

The rest appears to be faith can help overcome obstacles of being born into adverse circumstances, and that some of what is regarded as fate is actually poor choices, like putting one’s hand on a flame :fire: & getting burned.

If I could go to sleep every night and decide how and what I want to dream, I could live a perfect life of perfect bliss, for all eternity, every night.

But, I have this sneaking suspicion that could I do such things, I would surely get bored after a few trillion years or so of the same old perfection and bliss.

I might eventually decide I want a surprise… something random… perhaps even imperfect.

That surprise was something else… but also nice. Let’s do that again… and again… and again… a few billion times at a time, and let’s give ourselves amnesia for it so we don’t spoil the climax at the end, when we’ve experienced all there is to experience - the good the bad, and the atrociously ugly.

Exhortation to hold firm Lotus Sutra chapb13

"At that time the Bodhisattva-Mahasattva Medicine King and the BodhisattvaMahasattva Great Eloquence, with their retinue of twenty thousand bodhisattvas, all in the presence of the Buddha, made this vow, saying: "Be pleased, World-honored One, to be without anxiety!

" After the extinction of the Buddha we will keep, read, recite, and preach this sutra. In the evil age to come living beings will decrease in good qualities, while they will increase in utter arrogance [and] in covetousness of gain and honors, [and will] develop their evil qualities and be far removed from emancipation.

Though it may be difficult to teach and convert them, we, arousing our utmost patience, will read and recite this sutra, keep, preach, and copy it, pay every kind of homage to it, and spare not our body and life."

Just a brief review of the sacred numbers of Mahayana Buddhist Laws

All numbers from 1 to 10 have special Cosmic meanings. 3,6 and 9 are pivotal.

About number 3.

Three bodies of the Buddha.

"The three bodies are as follows: first, the Dharma body of a Thus Come One; second, the reward body of a Thus Come One; and third, the manifested body of a Thus Come One. These three types of bodies of a Thus Come One are invariably possessed by all Buddhas. If we use the moon as an illustration, we may say that the moon itself is comparable to the Dharma body, its light to the reward body, and its reflection to the manifested body. Just as a single moon has these three different aspects, so a single Buddha possesses the virtues of these three different bodies.

These doctrines of the five types of vision and the three bodies are not expounded anywhere outside of the Lotus Sutra. Therefore, the Great Teacher T’ien-t’ai has said, “The Buddha consistently possesses the three bodies throughout the three existences. But in the various teachings, he kept this secret and did not transmit it." -Nichiren quote

About number 6

“…the Nirvana Sutra states, “Sad indicates perfect endowment.” The Profound Meaning of the Four Mahayana Treatises states, “Sad connotes six. In India the number six implies perfect endowment.” In his commentary Chi-tsang writes, “Sad is translated as perfect endowment.”. In the eighth volume of his Profound Meaning of the Lotus Sutra T’ien-t’ai remarks, “Sad is a Sanskrit word, which is translated as myō, or wonderful.” Bodhisattva Nāgārjuna, in the heart of his thousand-volume Treatise on the Great Perfection of Wisdom, comments, “Sad signifies six.” Nāgārjuna was thirteenth in the lineage of the Buddha’s successors, the founder of the True Word, Flower Garland, and the other schools, a great sage of the first stage of development, and the person whose true identity was the Thus Come One Dharma Clouds Freedom King.”

The characters Myoho-renge-kyo are Chinese. In India, the Lotus Sutra is called Saddharma-pundarīka-sūtra. --Nichiren Quote

About number 9

“Thus the cause and effect of the Ten Worlds as expounded in the earlier sutras and the theoretical teaching of the Lotus Sutra are wiped out, and the cause and effect of the Ten Worlds in the essential teaching are revealed. This is the doctrine of original cause and original effect. It reveals that the nine worlds are all present in beginningless Buddhahood and that Buddhahood is inherent in the beginningless nine worlds. This is the true mutual possession of the Ten Worlds, the true hundred worlds and thousand factors, the true three thousand realms in a single moment of life.”–Nichiren quote

A writing of the Buddhist Priest Nichiren

The Kalpa of Decrease

THE kalpa of decrease1 has its origin in the human heart. As the poisons of greed, anger, and foolishness gradually intensify, the life span of human beings gradually decreases and their stature diminishes.

Before the introduction of Buddhism in the lands of China and Japan, the non-Buddhist scriptures of the Three Sovereigns, the Five Emperors, and the Three Sages were used to bring order to the hearts of the people and govern the world. When the hearts of the people gradually diminished in good and grew adept at evil, it became impossible to restrain profoundly evil offenses because the wisdom of the non-Buddhist scriptures was shallow. Since the world was ungovernable with the non-Buddhist scriptures, the Buddhist scriptures were gradually introduced, and when they were used in governing, the world became tranquil. This was solely because the wisdom of Buddhism can fully elucidate the hearts of the people.

What are called “non-Buddhist writings” today differ in spirit from the original non-Buddhist scriptures. Although when Buddhism was introduced the non-Buddhist scriptures and the Buddhist scriptures vied with each other, in time the non-Buddhist scriptures were defeated, and the ruler and the people no longer made use of them. But as adherents of the non-Buddhist scriptures became followers of the Buddhist scriptures, and confrontations came to an end, these adherents extracted the essence of the Buddhist scriptures, increased their wisdom, and incorporated it into the non-Buddhist scriptures. Foolish rulers thought that this was actually the wisdom of the non-Buddhist writings.

Moreover, when good wisdom gradually diminished and evil wisdom surpassed it in people’s hearts, the rulers tried to govern society with the wisdom of the Hinayana sutras, which are also included among the Buddhist scriptures, but the world was not at peace. At that time, when the rulers spread the Mahayana sutras and used them to govern, order was somewhat restored in the world. After that, when the wisdom of the Mahayana teachings was no longer adequate, the wisdom of the sutra of the one vehicle was introduced and used to govern the world, and for a brief while the world was at peace.

The present age is such that neither the non-Buddhist scriptures, the Hinayana sutras, the Mahayana sutras, nor the one vehicle of the Lotus Sutra has any effect. The reason is that the enormity of the greed, anger, and foolishness in people’s hearts is equal to the superiority of the World-Honored One of Great Enlightenment in great good. To p.1121illustrate, in the keenness of its sense of smell, a dog is superior to a man. Moreover, in picking up the scent of birds and beasts, its nose is not inferior to a great sage’s supernatural power of smell.2 The owl’s keenness of hearing, the kite’s sharpness of eye, the sparrow’s lightness of tongue, and the dragon’s magnificence of body—all surpass even the faculties of a worthy. Thus, the extremity of greed, anger, and foolishness in people’s hearts in the impure world of the latter age makes it difficult for any worthy or sage to control.

This is because, though the Buddha cured greed with the medicine of the meditation on the vileness of the body, healed anger with the meditation on compassion for all, and treated foolishness with the meditation on the twelve-linked chain of causation, teaching these doctrines now makes people worse and compounds their greed, anger, and foolishness. For example, fire is extinguished by water, and evil is defeated by good. In contrast, however, if water is poured on fire that has emerged from water, it would be as if one had poured oil, producing an even greater conflagration.

Now in this latter, evil age, great evil arises less from secular wrongdoing than in connection with the doctrines of the religious world. When people today, who are unaware of this, endeavor to cultivate roots of good, events that lead to the ruin of the world occur all the more. Although superficially it may seem to be an act of good to provide support to the priests of the Tendai, True Word, and other schools of the present age, in reality it is a great evil surpassing even the five cardinal sins and the ten evil acts.

For this reason, in order that peace reign in the age, if a wise man existed in the world with wisdom like that of the World-Honored One of Great Enlightenment, and if he met with a worthy ruler like King Sen’yo;3 and if together they devoted themselves to putting an end to these acts of good and committed the great evil of censuring, banishing, cutting off alms to, or even beheading those persons of the eight schools who are thought to be men of wisdom, then the age may be pacified to some extent.

This is explained in the first volume of the Lotus Sutra where it says, “The true aspect of all phenomena can only be understood and shared between Buddhas.” In the phrase “consistency from beginning to end,”4 “beginning” indicates the root of evil and the root of good, and “end” indicates the outcome of evil and the outcome of good. One who is thoroughly awakened to the nature of good and evil from their roots to their branches and leaves is called a Buddha. T’ien-t’ai stated, “Life at each moment is endowed with the Ten Worlds.”5 Chang-an stated, “The Buddha intended these as his ultimate teachings. How could they ever be easy to understand?”6 Miao-lo added that “this principle is the ultimate revelation of his [T’ien-t’ai’s] final and supreme teaching.”7 The Lotus Sutra states, “[The doctrines that they preach . . .] will never be contrary to the true reality.”8 T’ien-t’ai commented on this, saying that “no worldly affairs of life or work are ever contrary to the true reality.”9 A person of wisdom is not one who practices Buddhism apart from worldly affairs but, rather, one who thoroughly understands the principles by which the world is governed.

When the Yin dynasty became corrupt and the people were suffering, T’ai-kung Wang10 appeared in the world and beheaded King Chou of the Yin, bringing an end to the people’s misery. When the Second Emperor of the Ch’in dynasty11 caused the people to taste bitterness, Chang Liang appeared and restored order to the world, enabling them to know sweetness. Though these men lived before the p.1122introduction of Buddhism, they helped the people as emissaries of Shakyamuni Buddha, the lord of teachings. And though the adherents of the non-Buddhist scriptures were unaware of it, the wisdom of such men contained at heart the wisdom of Buddhism.

If there were a ruler of outstanding wisdom in the world today, at the time of the great earthquake of the Shōka era, or at the time of the great comet of the Bun’ei era,12 he would surely have heeded me, Nichiren. Or even if that had not happened, when strife broke out within the ruling clan in the ninth year of Bun’ei (1272), or when the Mongols attacked in the eleventh year of the same era, he would have welcomed me as King Wen of the Chou dynasty welcomed T’ai-kung Wang, or sought me out as King Kao-ting13 of the Yin dynasty sought out Fu Yüeh from seven ri away. Thus it is said that the sun and moon are not treasures to one who is sightless, and that a worthy man will be hated by a foolish ruler. Rather than go on at length, I will stop here. The heart of the Lotus Sutra is just as I have explained. You should not think of it as otherwise. Great evil portends the arrival of great good. If all of Jambudvīpa were to be thrown into chaos, there could be no doubt that [this sutra would] “be widely propagated throughout Jambudvīpa.”14

I have decided to send Āchārya Daishin to pay a visit to the grave of the late lay priest Rokurō.15 In the past, I had thought that, if there were people in the Kanto region who had heard this teaching, I would go to their graves myself and recite the verse section of the “Life Span” chapter of the Lotus Sutra. If I were to go there under the present circumstances, however, the entire province would hear of it within the day, and it would probably cause an uproar as far away as Kamakura. Even though they have steadfast faith, wherever I go, people must fear the eyes of others.

When I thought how much the late lay priest Rokurō might be longing to see me since I had not yet visited, it seemed to me that there was probably something I could do. Thus to begin with, I have decided to send a disciple to recite the verse section of the “Life Span” chapter before his grave. I ask for your understanding on that point.

With my deep respect.

Nichiren

Background

Neither the date nor addressee of this letter is known. Judging from the concluding paragraph, Nichiren Daishonin may have sent it via his disciple Āchārya Daishin to someone in the clan of the late lay priest Takahashi Rokurō Hyōe, a believer who lived in Kajima in Fuji District of Suruga Province.

In the opening statement the Daishonin says, “The kalpa of decrease has its origin in the human heart.” He then explains that the world declines as a result of human delusion, and that, as the greed, anger, and foolishness of people’s hearts intensify, progressively higher teachings are needed to check that influence. In the present time, the Latter Day of the Law, those three poisons are so pervasive that the provisional teachings not only fail to restrain them, but aggravate them all the more. In this age, the Daishonin explains, the worst evils actually arise, not from secular misdeeds, but from attachment to p.1123the doctrines of the various schools of Buddhism, whose practice no longer leads one to salvation.

Citing the passage from the “Expedient Means” chapter of the Lotus Sutra “The true aspect of all phenomena can only be understood and shared between Buddhas,” the Daishonin explains that only the Buddhas’ wisdom is capable of discerning the supreme truth that will bring about peace in the world. He also explains that a person of true wisdom is not one who carries out the Buddhist practice in isolation from the world, but who thoroughly comprehends the principles by which the world may be governed. This is in keeping with the Lotus Sutra’s teaching that the ultimate reality is manifest in all phenomena. In this sense, the wise ministers who helped bring peace to their dynasties in China in the ages before the introduction of Buddhism may be said to have grasped a portion of the Buddhist Law.

Though the ruler of Japan did not heed the Daishonin’s admonition that only faith in the Mystic Law could restore peace to the land, the Daishonin nevertheless was convinced that his teaching would one day flourish. As suggested by the title of this letter, the disasters besetting society in his time were viewed by the Daishonin from one perspective as stemming from human delusion and attachment to inferior teachings. However, as indicated by the statement “Great evil portends the arrival of great good,” the Daishonin also interpreted them from another perspective as heralding the rise and spread of the supreme Law.

Lyrics to Taylor Swift’s recent song, “Karma”. (caution some “nasty” words)

“Karma” the religious term, is not a cool, hip, phrase, although pop culture often appropriates it that way.

Although the use of the word “god” might bristle some people as a sacrilege–it is not.

In Buddhism, “karma” also has an uppercase meaning. The “Supreme Law,”. IS “God!”

I haven’t listened to Taylor Swift much at all and this song is really the only one I really paid attention. to

The name of the “Lotus Sutra” is Saddharma Pundarika in Sanskrit and more familiar name, in Japanese, is Myo Ho Renge “wonderful Law of cause and effect.”. Pundarika and Renge are words for a blossoming Lotus, which means cause and effect–karma.

In the Sutra, the Buddha states, “I am always thinking about how to bring Awakening/Enlightenment/Salvation to all beings”

Last night I saw the Taylor Swift concert in IMAX----good grief! I think she is praising the Supreme Law.

"You’re talkin’ ■■■■ for the hell of it
Addicted to betrayal but you’re relevant
You’re terrified to look down
'Cause if you dare, you’ll see the glare
Of everyone you burned just to get there
It’s coming back around

And I keep my side of the street clean
You wouldn’t know what I mean

'Cause karma is my boyfriend, karma is a god
Karma is the breeze in my hair on the weekend
Karma’s a relaxing thought
Aren’t you envious that for you, it’s not?
Sweet like honey, karma is a cat
Purring in my lap 'cause it loves me
Flexing like a ■■■■■■■ acrobat
Me and karma vibe like that

Spider boy, king of thieves
Weave your little webs of opacity
My pennies made your crown
Trick me once, trick me twice
Don’t you know that cash ain’t the only price
It’s coming back around

And I keep my side of the street clean
You wouldn’t know what I mean

'Cause karma is my boyfriend, karma is a god
Karma is the breeze in my hair on the weekend
Karma’s a relaxing thought
Aren’t you envious that for you, it’s not?

Ask me what I’ve learned from all those years
Ask me what I earned from all those tears
Ask me why so many fade when I’m still here (I’m still, I’m still here)

‘Cause karma is the thunder rattling your ground
Karma’s on your scent like a bounty hunter
Karma’s gonna track you down
Step by step, from town to town

Karma takes all my friends to the summit
Karma is the guy on the screen

I have always noticed how bugs keep falling, landing in my swimming pool. Strangely I never get bored saving them. It is a full-time job and one should not expect anything in return. In this way, the memory banks are always fresh and new.

There are the principles of True Cause (Honnin-myo) and True Effect (Honga-myo). Honga looks backwards and Honnin always looks forwards.

Especially when one gets bored easily, one can look at saving these silly, but worthy creatures, floundering forever in the Sea of Suffering.

Everyone is already saved and everything is gonna be alright. lol

No wonder you get bored so easily.

This world as it is, is not Heaven or the Pure Land. In fact there is tons of hell going on.

The Kingdom of Heaven is at hand (Jesus) or This World as it is, is the Buddha’s land (Buddha) are expressions of Nirvana and happiness. Do you get bored and seek misery?

With a guiding principle of Honga, in this time period, you end up in internment camps. just to avoid boredom. This is due to vanity and forgetting the vow.

Even thinking, “everyone is already saved” (heretical Zen karma) is the “bottomless pit”

Jesus told his disciples to become “fishers of men” The Buddha exhorted all to teach the Law even in the evil age to come no matter the persecution.
Zen Men thought they were too special for that.

If by bored you mean tired of hearing how “correct” every self-professed “guru” or scripture “expert” is, then yeah, definitely bored with how well the most “spiritually educated” among us can all see down their dogmatic slopes, but never up them.

It used to be kind of funny how every last one of them have the same exact schtick with slightly different wordy words, but behind all that, it’s really sad how hard people try to make everyone else believe in the higher powers the way they specifically want them to. In fact, it’s actually gross, and the reason so many people are rightly repelled by something as petty as organized religion. :man_shrugging:

The “boredom” I am talking about is from your earlier remarks the idea:

"But, I have this sneaking suspicion that could I do such things, I would surely get bored after a few trillion years or so of the same old perfection and bliss.

I might eventually decide I want a surprise… something random… perhaps even imperfect."

You aren’t the first person to think this one up. … As if God/Buddha is a sado-masochist, who creates misery and suffering out of boredom.

In fact, 'God/Buddha" is a Law, not a fruitcake, angry child throwing tantrums and punishing creatures, for not worshipping him/her right.

Yes it can be boring when others don’t get it, that either way life is eternal and life and death can be called illusion, but add misery and suffering and bloody animal hells to the equation and it become more difficult to justify being a person in a hellish lifestate, who forgets that one’s main task at this time is to rescue all beings from their own self-created hell. Cause and Effect means SELF-CREATED. So, regardless what money making gurus say, you can’t avoid your share of the load.

This is nothing new. Fake gurus and preachers greedily living off their flock, are common, but the rarity of hearing the Supreme Law is harder to see. That is the mustard seed.

There is nothing new under the sun. I have never come up with anything original (sans maybe some horrible noise combinations on a fret board) and I have never had a spiritual experience that isn’t shared by billions before and after me.

Everyone is saved, even those among us that some people want to infinitely suffer over finite transgressions. Everything else is nothing but a reactive impulse.

You don’t fully grasp it, but this is the same karmic seed (CAUSE AND EFFECT) created by the Jews who tried to kill Jesus. It is also the same karma created by Devadatta who tried to kill Gautama Buddha, or the same karma the Zen and Shingon tantric gurus created, by trying to kill Sun-Lotus (Nichiren) and other Buddhas and Bodhisattvas in the past present and future.

It’s not some raging diety throwing lightening bolts. It’s really just natural cause and effect, like burning your finger if you stick it in fire. Seeds can be scorched and no good tree can grow from it.

Nichiren wrote:

“The Vimalakirti Sutra stated that, when one seeks the Buddhas’ emancipation in the minds of ordinary beings, one finds that ordinary beings are the entities of enlightenment, and that the sufferings of birth and death are nirvana. It also states that, if the minds of living beings are impure, their land is also impure, but if their minds are pure, so is their land. There are not two lands, pure or impure in themselves. The difference lies solely in the good or evil of our minds.”

But you do, and so does everyone else.

No one grasps it. Karma is like a seed. A bad seed grows bad fruit. Seeds get poisoned. There is no “everyone else.”

If no one grasps it, no one stands fit to teach it.

Everyone seems to want to be divine while in human form, but no one seems to want to be human while they’re human.

So you just killed Jesus and Buddha. I said you did not fully grasp it was the same karmic seed the Jews tried to kill Jesus etc.

And that same karmic seed is still spread
